I would like to comment on "Shelter" but I can't. I'm blind and cannot see the pictures... No sympathy, I participate better than marginally on FB and other social media because of technology like computers, and video magnification reading machines.
May I ask some questions about "The Book Thief" instead of "Shelter"? As an English teacher (retired) and writing teacher, "The BooK Thief" is powerful subject matter and important teachable material.
Did you have discussions with your editors about the opening of the book. And if so, could you write about those discussions?
I found and my students found, the opening difficult and confusing. Its the kind of opening that makes reluctant readers put the book down as another piece of nonsense.
Obviously, the opening makes perfect sense, after getting into the story and finishing the book.
I honor you on a brilliant story and a splendid book. Many of my students asked if it is a true story, in the path of Anne Frank. I think that's a great compliment to you.
