Michael Burton I haven't posted anything since May, so I told myself I would start to make regular entries on my blog, starting today.

Where to begin? Let me start with a book review. I just finished a book by Brian Freeman, The Bone House. This was the first book I have read of this author, and I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. I gave the book 5 stars rating, and I don't do that too often.

Why did I enjoy the book? It was for several reasons. First was the storyline. At the beginning of the book, it appeared it was going to be an ordinary murder thriller, where the reader knows who the killer is and follows the protagonist as he tracks down the killer. However, it was everything but that. When you think the storyline is head in one direction, it takes a turn into another. This happened throughout the book. It really kept me guessing.

The second reason is the characters. I read in some of the reviews, prior to reading the book, there were too many characters and that made it hard to follow. There is some truth in this. There are more characters than your normal mystery/thriller, but I have to respectively disagree about making the storyline hard to follow. I found the characters enhanced the story. They were very well developed and each character had their own side story which contributed to the many twist and turns.

Finally, and perhaps the most important reason was, I found the book to be fast paced. It was written to get directly to the point, without being too verbose. There were very few lulls in the action and suspense and that kept me wanting to turn the page.

If you are looking for a great read, I certainly recommend this book. I do plan on reading other books of Mr. Freeman's.

When I constructed this blog, my intentions weren't to only write about my writing and reading experiences but to share positive and humorous everyday occurrences.

As I was writing this, one of those occurrences happened that made me laugh.

I am writing this blog at a local coffee house/bakery. A mother and her small son, maybe 3, passed by me as they were leaving. The son was holding his cup and turned away from the mother wanting to refill his cup before he left. He told his mom he want more of the Jalapeno drink. I just had to laugh.

I know earlier I said my blog was for positive and humorous everyday experiences, well this is a rare exception to that rule. Prior to the little boy and his mother experience, a woman was leaving the bakery. As she arrived at the door, another woman was coming in. The woman coming in had to walk with a cane. She appeared to be laboring as she made her way to the door. The woman about to leave just stood there as the other woman struggled to open the door. The woman leaving offered absolutely no help. Needless to say, this made me a little angry. Why couldn't the woman open the door for the woman coming in? What has happened to manners?

Finally, I was recently reading in the local newspaper about a robbery at a nearby restaurant. I would normally skip over something like this, but a phrase, in the article, caught my eye, "The incident was reported about 11:45 p.m. at Bandits' restaurant."

Have a good day everyone.
