Trailers and chapters

I promised to post snippets from THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE soon, and I will. But not yet. I have to do a skimming re-read of the book to find some good ones that aren't too spoilerish and I've been busy this week getting things together for my accountant (taxes, grr!) and working on the book trailer for THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE. I started doing book trailers after seeing some really cool ones on other books and thinking, hmm, that looks fun. Ahem. If I only knew.

DESTINED FOR AN EARLY GRAVE was the first of my books that got the trailer treatment, and what I found out during the process was that my husband has been right all along: I am a control freak, lol. I ended up picking most of the pictures, changing the music, and rewriting the script. This meant spending several hours on royalty-free sites like iStockphoto and Shutterstock trying to find decent likenesses of Cat and Bones (which is frustrating because no one really looks like them to me) then spending more time on places like Digital Juice looking for royalty-free music, and toying with the script until the company probably wanted to put a hit out on me. My publisher did the next trailer for FIRST DROP OF CRIMSON, and after discovering what Circle of Seven already found out when it comes to my extremely strong opinions on character images, music, and script, it was mutually decided that for future books, I'd handle my own trailers.

ETERNAL KISS OF DARKNESS was next, and I ended up picking all but two images for it (one was a sword, the other a guy in fog), writing 90% of the script, and picking the music. So when it came time to start thinking about THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE'S trailer, I gave up my you-pick-everything-and-because-I'm-difficult-I'll-just-replace-it-all-afterward pattern and decided to do it all myself from the start. Script, done. Images, all selected. Music, narrowed it down to four songs. Once I've settled on a song, a friend with tech skills is putting it into trailer form for me, and then I'll buy a Circle of Seven distribution package and have them seed it around the internet. Much smoother process this way, because now the only person I'm driving crazy is myself, heh.

So, if you end up hating the trailer for THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE once it's out, it'll be all my fault. And if you end up loving it, well, that'll be all my fault, too :) .

And though all this meant I don't have snippets, let it not be said that I came here empty handed. If you want to read the first two chapters of THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE, click here.
