My family is moving from a tiny town to a major city. You've often mentioned going exploring with your boys. How do you decide where to explore? Do you scout ahead or simply walk out the door and follow your nose?

Both. I usually just go for walks (unless the neighborhood at night is lit by a bunch of crack and meth pipes). But, I also use the Google and search for local bloggers. You can mine their posts for fun stuff to do or, at least, the best place to buy meth.
