What Shall We Talk About?

Today's blog is obviously late. Partly because I'm in the middle of edits, but partly because I'm not in the mood for anything heavy or industry-related, but I couldn't think of anything else.  ;-)

A lot of authors are giving up on blogs in favor of communicating with readers on other social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Facebook and my Goodreads group. I'm not a fan of Twitter, though I do occasionally pop in. The problem with Twitter is that it's difficult to have an actual conversation, and as I think about it, one thing that I do really like about blogging is the discussions that often arise out of it. This is also why I used to enjoy LiveJournal so much. The informative and amusing discussions that would evolve in the comment section.

But then again, as more and more members of the m/m romance community become writers and reviewers in their own right, there's less time for discussion anyway. Do you still visit blogs like you used to? Do you yourself blog? I used to visit and interact on blogs, but that was years ago. I really rarely have time to read blogs, let alone comment barring the occasional industry train-wreck or post on something of current interest.

Which brings me back to my own blog. I don't have a huge following here, and most of you follow me elsewhere as well, but the traffic is pretty decent and I enjoy our interaction.

So I expect to continue to blog on a weekly basis. My question is, assuming you still plan to read the blog on a weekly basis, what would you like to see here?

Most of you are readers, not writers, so I assume general writing info would not be of interest. But then again, you never know. Do you want to see more guests on the blog? Do you want more excerpts? Contests? Giveaways? Incessant babbling from me? ;-D  What would be of interest?

Now's a good time to figure this out because we still have half a year's worth of blogs ahead.

Spiderorchid I actually enjoy the "incessant babbling"... ^_^

Information about new books is always great, including excerpts (and information about upcoming print versions of e-books - I know, I'm hopelessly old-fashioned).

Deborah Hi Josh!
count me in for the "incessant babbling"!
Also, it will probably come off as being nosy, but I love it when you talk about your new house, garden and the trips you take.

message 3: by Laura (new)

Laura I would love to hear anything about your writing process (but like you say, maybe that's more interesting to the writer readers than the reader readers).

I love the excerpts. Plus you're a gifted incessant babbler. Keep it up! ;)

Alexia I would really enjoy discussions about your books and characters, can't have enough of them! Your writing process is also interesting to me...

Toni Babble incessantly, please! I very much enjoy meandering along with you; it's like strolling along on a bit of a twisting and winding garden path, not being able to see whats all the way at the end. I stop here and there enjoying the flowers and artistry of landscaping along the way until I turn that last bend...and then wish there was more.

Trio LOVE your writing, anything you have to say will be appreciated!!

Justjeanette Actually, given the premise that there really are only 7 stories how do you find inspirations?
Another possibly heavier question relates to the general portaryal of characters as a whole... Do you think writers, as a whole (or even a small sub-group of said) to people in general a disservice by writing to the popular tropes? I started reading m/m romance as much to get away from the horrid tropes in historical romance... that and a love of slashy fanfiction... but I'm seeing more and more the demascularisation of the male gay protagonists with a side order of falling into the slut model often used on females... a man is a stud if he has mutliple FEMALE partners but a male gay character is often described as a slut in the same way women are if he has multiple partners....
Ps: I do love your writing, Cheers JustJeanette

Sandy In for incessant babbling:) I also enjoy reading about the writing process, as I get to live/write vicariously through my favorite authors. Character inspiration is great. Snippets/codas/day in the life pieces are amazing, although they obviously take up more time that you could spend writing some of my favorite books:) But whatever you decide, please keep interacting. I've found over the last few years that I enjoy the books of authors I follow on blogs and Twitter (not FB so much, not sure why) so much more than others. Maybe it was knowing how annoying their cat was while they were writing the book I'm reading:)
