The public life of Charles Dickens

Regarded as perhaps one of the most influential authors of his time, Charles Dickens has won the hearts of many with his writing, creating surprising plots and characters we love to love (and love to hate). Our Oxford World’s Classics reading group, in its third season, has chosen Dickens’s Great Expectations for discussion. In addition to analyzing that a work for its literary depth, it is just as important to consider an author’s life and the context in which the work was written.


Dickens’s life was not an easy one, nor was it ever boring. In the timeline presented below, we have only included a handful of dates, milestones, and events, which only proves that Dickens was, undoubtedly, one of the most interesting authors of his time.
