The Compass
Some say the age of competition and fear is waning; that there’s no need for hate and greed to rule. In the case of gay rights, perhaps that’s true. But you’d never know it from the Republican candidates for President, their billionaire supporters and ardent fans.
Still, no matter what politicians say, it’s everyone’s choice to be afraid. After all, what happened to the terrible Ebola scare, whipped to a frenzy by the usual suspects? Who gains from stoking our fears? Is it possible to stand in the midst of the storm of anger, fear, hate, greed, blame and anxiety and find a way to calm, peace, compassion, generosity and mutual respect – the alternative that’s managing the Ebola virus?
The anger and fear come when we feel lost. But we need not feel lost if we use our inner compass. Everyone has one, a core human imperative. A sense of grace, calm, peace, compassion, generosity and mutual respect. That’s your compass. You’ve felt it haven’t you, and used it to find your way? Let’s use it now and more often. Let’s let the age of competition and fear wane. At least in our own hearts and minds. It need not be this way. There is an alternative. Use your inner compass, please!
