Hilary Clinton: “The Sight of a Black Man in a Hoodie is Scary” Even to “Open-Minded Whites”
You know what scares me, as a PoC?
An old white woman who thinks she should control the world.
*cough cough*
I’m not Clinton’s biggest fan and I’m not planning to vote for her in the primary, but…
“And our problem is not all kooks and klanssmen. It’s also the cruel joke
that goes unchallenged. It’s the offhand comment about not wanting
“Those people” in the neighborhood. Let’s be honest. For a lot of
well-meaning open-minded white people, the sight of a young black man in
a hoodie still evokes a twinge of fear. And news reports about poverty
and crime and discrimination evoke sympathy, even empathy. But too
rarely do they spur us to action or prompt us to question our own
assumptions and privilege. We can’t hide from any of these hard truths
about race and justice in America. We have to name them and own them and
then change them.“
She’s clearly talking about the prevalence of racism and how it’s more ubiquitous in the white community than we think, and how it’ll come up in more subtle ways as opposed to just blatant hate from white power groups.
If you mention just the one sentence about hoodies it does look like she’s talking about how scary black people are…. and of course, many news sources are opting to do just that. This includes the progressive ones, which is disappointing to see.
Remember “what difference, at this point, does it make?” Of course you do, ‘cause conservatives are STILL parroting this out-of-context quote left and right. They love doing shit like this. Regardless of your feelings on Clinton, we really shouldn’t be helping them.
