A snippet from the newly released contemporary romance- Red Tulip #FridaySnippets

Scene set - A man speaks to Darcy - the cyrptic line - When was the last time you were offered the gift of a red tulip? Curious, she prepares for her day of work as a junior gardener, locking the gardening shed as she leaves. The end of the day she returns to the locked shed.

Sighing, I inserted the key into the lock for the big door and drove the cart inside. A splash of colour on the wooden bench made me gasp. I jumped out of the cart and picked up the note resting beside the flower."I offer the gift of a red tulip."My fingers trembled as I picked up the tulip. How did it get there? Did he put it there?I glanced around the shed. Everything seemed normal. No broken windows. No doors swinging on bent hinges.Darcy, snap out of it. This isn't some fantasy story. I gave myself a small shake, then wet a paper towel, wrapped it around the base of the tulip, locked the gardening shed, and returned home. The subway ride was mind-numbing as usual. Everyday people traveling home from work, lost in their thoughts and problems. A few women glanced at the tulip with a curious gaze. The brilliance of the red petals was eye-catching. Smiles briefly crept across the other passenger's lips. A twinkling of joy in an otherwise drab existence.I gripped the overhanging strap and swayed with the rolling of the car. He'd been a pleasure to behold. The kind of man my elderly grandmother would've called a dapper sort. I never actually knew what she meant by that, but the vision of him in his dark suit, bowler hat and silver tipped cane, clarified the definition.Brushing my finger across my upper lip, I wiped away a bead of sweat. The subway was unusually hot for an early spring day.A tired-looking woman sat near me on the subway bench, holding this month's Vogue. She often rode the same car as I. My nickname for her was Calla. After the Calla lily. She seemed quiet and exotic looking, but proud. Like the flower. Something tickled my leg. I glanced lower and watched the magazine slide from her fingers as her eyes fluttered closed and her head bobbed forward. I smiled. Calla always slept on the return ride home. The magazine slipped a bit more and settled on the floor. My gaze riveted to the open page.
