It seems, quite often, that LGBTQ books are solely focused on the characters’ sexuality. Which, if you ask a person who identifies as LGBTQ, gets old. And it’s a trap that many diversity books fall in. But where’s the epic sci-fi adventure with a lesbian space captain and her transgender pilot? The creepy thriller with the asexual detective? The boy-meets-boy, love-at-first-sight romance? Where? Well, it’s being published by indie publishers, of course. Meet Interlude Press, whose mission is to publish quality LGBTQ novels, where being gay isn’t necessarily the main source of conflict. Their first anniversary is this week and, one year out, they’re already raking in the awards. Of the eight books they published in 2014, three of them were Foreword INDIEFAB Book Award finalists and one went on to win silver. Clearly they’re doing something very right.
