E.L. Doctorow, author of a dozen novels– as well as plays, essays, commentary and short fiction– passed away yesterday at the age of 84. America, in all its guises, was his sandbox, and he mined its history and native literary genres to build towering works of art. From his breakout early hits like The Book of Daniel and Ragtime, to his late-career masterpiece The March, Doctorow gave us unforgettable fictional mirrors that reflect our nation and ourselves.
