Look, don’t touch…
Since I follow a lot of book themed tumblrs, I see tons and tons of beautiful reprints- hard covers embossed and gilded, looking so delightfully old fashioned and beautiful. And I think, “I need to get a copy of that! I LOVE THAT BOOK.” But I remind myself what happens. If I buy a book that I already own based on its beauty, I won’t get rid of the old book. I will pick up the old book, and I will think one of the following: 1. Aw, but it’s so beat up. I can’t give it away, no one would want it! I can’t throw it out, it was such a good book, and it served me well. 2. The cover is really, really nice. Look at that. I really like that painting. (Or, “This copy of Sense and Sensibility has Emma Thompson on it! Emma is so cool.”) 3. Well, the hard cover is pretty heavy. I should keep this paperback in case I need to reference it…(This happened with my Shakespears when I found, for free, a complete 1900’s hard cover set at a library. I took them home, certain I would give away all my paper back editions of the plays, only to keep the paperbacks because they are easier to hold.) 4. I’ve had this for ages. I feel some sentimental attachment and cannot possibly give it away. It’s a sickness, I tell you, a sickness.
