Interview with author E.A. Kelly
An Interview with E.A. KellyAuthor of M/M Erotic Romance, The Cove
When it comes to the summer holidays, fireman Lance McCarthy can think of only one place he wants to spend his time away from work. Compared to the miserable city of Glasgow, a week on the third largest of the sunny Balearic Islands sounds like paradise. However, when he chose Ibiza as his destination, he didn't expect to bump into Malachy Walsh; an Irish man dressed in blue striped pyjamas. The Cove is an erotic short story that may well bring a smile to your face and a tear to your eye.
Q) Tell us a little bit about how the idea for this story got started.
A: It began on a rainy day whilst sitting in my car at the beach. I love the rain, but I began to think about someone who'd want to exchange it for some place hot and sunny, like Ibiza. So, whilst waiting for my fiance to finish surfing, I started plotting my main character in my head, and once home I began to write.
Q) What prompted you to tackle the central theme of this particular story?
A: I wanted to base my story in Ibiza. I've never been there before, so I searched online for information that would help, especially with my story being a male / male relationship. Whilst searching, I came across the information of a bar which hosts themed night parties, and in an instant I pictured my two characters meeting at such a party, and exactly how they would meet, so I began my story there.
Q) What do the main elements of the story bring to the relationships between the central characters?
A: Ideally, I wanted to show a relaxation between the characters and their relationship. In my story, both men had travelled alone to Ibiza to visit the gay scene and have a good time with perhaps many different people over the course of their stay. Upon meeting each other, they felt drawn and longed for no one else their entire trip.
Q) What do you feel is the biggest lesson your main characters learn from their experiences in this story?
A: I guess that happiness can be found in the bed of just one person, not many.
Q) How important was setting to the plot of the story?
A: I knew exactly how I wanted my characters to meet, and exactly how I wanted the story to end. The final chapter practically wrote itself, so I worked my way towards it by plotting each chapter. I wanted to also show the research I'd conducted on the locations by showing those in various chapters also, which further made the character's holiday more thrilling, of course.
Q) What is the significance of the title? What prompted you to choose it?
A: The main feature of the story is centred around the characters visiting a secluded cove in Ibiza, having to travel there by paddle boat. There they're able to do what ... they want to do - won't spoil it! Anyway, so I chose a basic title for my story to reflect that, and simply named it The Cove.
Q) What was your biggest challenge in writing and publishing this story?
A: For me, formatting was my biggest challenge. I was lucky enough to ask a friend to edit the piece for me, picking up on any mistakes I may have made. I'd never self published before, so making my work perfect for Amazon's Kindle Store took some time. I also made the cover myself.
Q) What is your favorite genre to write? Will you be exploring more genres you haven't tried yet?
A: Mainly, the only genre I've ever written is male / male contemporary romance. I would like to try historical some time, as well as heterosexual stories and fantasy.
Q) What is your next planned project? What can you tell us about it?
A: I do have a story laid out, though more in my head than on document at the moment. I've only written the prologue. The idea came to me whilst I was walking my dogs on the beach a few nights ago. It will be a heterosexual story, with a little fantasy twist to include angels, both good and evil.
