Did You Know?
Did you know that 100% of the people in my country are immigrants? Yes, even those in the First Nations community came here from somewhere else. That citizens from my country have successfully repelled invasion from the USA, not once, but twice? That we have survived at least three bloody insurrections? That we had a bloodless coup? The ruling political party had a massive majority in the house of parliament, abused its power and was relegated to obscurity by a massive public backlash at the next election. That contrary to popular belief, the ethnicity of my country is only 20% English and 10% French? That despite our rocky start, relations between my country and the USA are good? We are each others biggest trading partners. We buy 30% of their exports and they 60% of ours. That despite the view of other countries and even Americans themselves, there are BIG differences between our two cultures. We are generally more laid back, not as rabidly nationalistic, political or religious. We tend to treat people how they act, not how they look. When you have a climate like ours than can and will kill you at the blink of an eye, you don’t care what a persons color, race, sexual orientation or religion is. You accept and give help where and when it is needed. The people I hang around with have a joke. We only care about one color, green. We work hard, play harder and like any big family, we have our internal problems. Like any big family, I pity anyone that tries to interfere with us. Take a cue from our national sport. Ice Hockey. Even if we are beaten, bloody and should give up, we won’t. That instead of using our cultural differences as excuses, we embrace them, learning from each other, taking the good and letting go the bad. All of our ancestors came here to get away from the influences of the ‘Old Country’. To provide a better life for our descendants. Our country is an example of what the world can be. All people united behind one goal. A better, free life for our selves and others.
