Muslims believe that when you’re born, you are born Muslim and then life outside of that gets into the way. That’s why we tend to call it “revert” instead of “convert” because you’re actually just going back to how you were supposed to be! It’s very thoughtful of you to be concerned about appropriation and racism but the only advice I can really give you is that if you feel connected to Islam, you should research it further and perhaps go and talk to an imam at a local mosque!
