The advice I give every writer is to take your principles with you. I don’t know your situation, I am not living your life, but every writer I know worth a damn has had to make a choice between their gut and their detractors at some point.

Many, MANY times I have been advised not to focus on the stuff I care about. I was told repeatedly, as recently as two days ago, that it would damage my career and that I was ‘pigeon-holing’ my work.

All I can say is be prepared, there is no level of success or popularity that stops people from telling you what you SHOULD be writing. I want to say ignore them, but sometimes living in the real world means you can’t fully ignore them.

Writing takes discipline. Writing with a voice takes courage.

We are all making this decision every day, in some way or another.

It comes down to what kind of writer you want to be.

Good luck.
