Where my Characters come from

Many of you often wonder where authors get there bases for their characters. Mine are simple:

1. Work
2. Family
3. Strangers

Now, don't get me wrong. I don't pick from these groups at model all traits after these people. But, it's more like a starting point. Meaning...a shell for me to start my character.

Work, I go there everyday...almost. So where else would I have a cast of characters waiting to act. They don't realize that and of course, in my writing they don't look, act, or even smell the same. Hence the word, fiction.

Family

Everybody has them, relatives. The ones we love and the ones we love to hate. In any case, disown or ask why did you have to come to the family reunion. Pause...I know the answer, so I can include you in the next sequel. Thank you for the dialogue.

Strangers are why I go people watching in the mall. The best time to complete this activity is on the weekend. Close to a holiday (i.e Christmas, New Years, or Easter) during this time you'll find plenty of subjects. It's better to go with a friend so you want bring attention to yourself. Shop. Then, take a break in the food court. Everyone needs a snack. In essence, I create the alter egos for each of these categories and my imagination does the rest. Enjoy your fourth.
