Why I wrote HOPE OUT LOUD
Why did I write a novella sequel to The Life You've Imagined?
Because I've missed you. I've missed you greatly, dear readers.
For various reasons (a topic for another day) it's been a little while since The Whole Golden World, and it will be a while yet before I have another novel to share with you.
I do write for its own sake. Writing, even when no one reads it, is still fun, satisfying and fulfilling.
But the difference between writing for oneself and writing for an audience is the difference between singing in the shower and singing on stage. There's an electricity to writing for an audience, which seems to be there whether I hear directly from readers or not.
A novella seemed to be a manageable task while I'm working on my other projects. It was also something I could bring to you directly and quickly, via the self-publishing support of NLA Digital LLC, an offshoot of my literary agency.
Why did I choose to pick up five years after The Life You've Imagined? Its ensemble cast of four characters, each with her own complicated stories, seemed like it provided the richest material for continuing the tale.
So here it is, today in ebook form, and very soon as a physical book for the traditionalists in the crowd.
I hope you enjoy HOPE OUT LOUD, which takes place the week of July 4 in the lakeshore town of Haven, Michigan. Anna Geneva must return to her hometown and the scene of her infamous affair with her teenage love Will Becker, who was married at the time, with a young daughter. Anna plans to avoid him, watch her mom get married, and hightail it back to her private law practice and her cozy apartment in Chicago.
But in a town as small as Haven, avoiding the elder son of a prominent family is harder than it seems, especially with so much shared history. And Maeve Geneva’s wedding? Well, the bride is starting to worry that maybe she’s not ready to marry again after all, though she swears her ex-husband’s affectionate postcards have nothing to do with that.
Anna thought she’d left her hometown behind for good five years ago, but she’s learning it takes more than two hundred miles along the Lake Michigan shore to put Haven truly behind her…
