Authors do compete - but it's all friendly (most of the time!)

Here's Taylor Stevens and me right after her first novel THE INFORMATIONIST won the Barry Award in 2012 - and mine didn't! (But my LEARNING TO SWIM won another award two days later, so no worries.)
