June 25 1876 – The Battle of the Little Bighorn was fought and is commonly referred to as Custer’s Last Stand. The battle was an armed engagement between the combined forces of the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho Native American tribes against the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army, led by George Armstrong Custer. Taking place near the Little Big Horn River, it was the most prominent and most extensively studied battle of the Great Sioux War of 1876. The United States Army suffered a severe defeat and Custer was killed in action.
