Household Robots may be Possible in the Future
Artificial intelligence used to be a completely impossible thing. Now, it could be a thing of the very near future.
The video shown above is of Honda Motor Company’s ASIMO, which stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility, and is the most advanced humanoid robot in the world. According to its website, ASIMO is the first humanoid robot in the world that can walk independently and climb stairs. It can also understand preprogrammed gestures and spoken commands, recognize voices and faces, and interface with IC Communication cards. Having arms and hands, it can do things like turn on light switches, open doors, carry objects, and push carts.
This humanoid robot was really designed to be a helper robot, something like Rosie the housemaid in the cartoon The Jetsons. This robot can help around the house, help the elderly, or help someone confined to a wheelchair or bed. ASIMO is 4 feet and 3 inches in height, which makes it perfect to look eye to eye with someone sitting down.
In my story, The Hermit and the Time Machine, a robot helps two children build their time machine so they can return home. With the advent and advancement in the field of robotics, do you think this kind of future, where we become dependent on robots is possible? And will artificial intelligence, should it become a reality, surpass that of our own enough to annihilate our own species?
