So this just happened...
I was just at a lovely restaurant {name withheld} eating dinner with my mom.
When the waiter delivered our main courses, there was a side of spinach placed next to my mom which she didn't order. I asked if she ordered it and she replied no.
The waiter, still lingering, informed us it was complimentary. Or it came with her dish.
Whatever.
So we dig in. And we're about five minutes into our meal when another waiter swoops in and grabs the spinach.
My mom asks, "What are you doing?!"
He says, "This isn't for you. This doesn't come with your dish. We made a mistake." And he starts to make off with the spinach.
"No!" my mom says, trying to stop him but he's not having it. He walks away…straight to another table just two tables from us…where he puts the spinach down.
You guys, my mom had already eaten the spinach! At least two bites. Which is what she was trying to tell the waiter who didn't care because he was too busy stealing spinach and delivering it partially-consumed to table twelve.
By the time we were done laughing and a few more bites into our dinner, our waiter returned with a new side of spinach. He apologized for what happened. Of course we weren't as nearly as upset as we were amused (and concerned for the other table) about this.
Indian-giving aside, it wasn't ours to begin with. While my mom does love spinach, I believe it was Richard Bach who once said, "If you love something, set it free; if it comes backs it's yours, if it doesn't, it never was."
Not that she set if free as much as had it taken from her. But it came back. Totally meant to be.
Not quite sure what to say about the table who got the other spinach.
