"I started these liner notes from an airport in Italy on my way to attend the
Black Portraitures II: Imaging the Black Body and Re-staging Histories
, conference hosted by NYU in Florence. I was inspired by the fact that a large number of the diaspora's brightest thinkers, writers, artists and scholars would be traveling from different corners of the world to “explore the impulses, ideas, and techniques undergirding the production of self-representation and desire, and the exchange of the gaze from the 19th century to the present day in fashion, film, art, and the archives. Please accept my contribution to the conversation and move to the sounds of a Black global analysis, my Black global imagining. I feel deeply connected to my people and the music on this volume of the series was inspired by my focused nomadic journey. Come with me." --
