Why I wrote Willem by Hans M. Hirschi
Willem of the Tafel was not a given book. I never set out to write Sci-Fi. But when I saw that dance performance at the Gothenburg Opera House last fall, a dystopic future with lots of plastic and misery, something triggered my mind to give it a shot.So I needed a backdrop, a story around which my dystopia would revolve. And out came a world in which, at least initially, the world population was reduced to a mere 417 souls, living underneath the famous Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. In that mountain, the surviving population of the city had sought refuge from the “Great War”, an all out nuclear disaster that would strike Earth about a century from now.Naturally, I had to explain why, and I had to create this underground world, a world which had sustained itself for four centuries after the war. My initial thought was to write the entire novel about Tafel, as we meet it in the initial chapters. But hey, there’s the slight complication of my brain, right? And so, somewhere along the line, my hero gets in a jam and is exiled, to certain death on a surface the Tafelians believe not to be habitable. It would have been the end of the story. They toss him through the gates and Willem dies, from suffocation, radiation poisoning or at least starvation. While some people are saved by the bell, this particular story was saved by my subconscious, which, after I had done some very conscious research into nuclear winter and post-apocalyptic scenarios from the cold war era (these days, no one cares about the effects of nuclear war), shows that life on earth should once again be possible after four centuries, and so Willem leaves the Tafel and the real adventure begins. I hope you’ll join him on his wondrous adventures on a planet, given another lease at life.
Willem-of-the-tafel-divider The world we know is gone, destroyed by greed and ignorance. On a post-apocalyptic Earth, centuries into the future, few have survived the Great War. Some have taken refuge deep inside a mountain. One of them, Willem, is exiled to the surface... Alone and struggling to survive, Willem embarks on an epic journey, making a discovery that could once again alter the future of humanity. Willem of the Tafel is an epic tale of survival, second chances, hope and undying love. Willem-of-the-tafel-divider Check out the trailer for Willem of the Tafel

Adulthood and the demands of corporate life efficiently put an end to his fictional writing for over twenty years. A global executive in training and channel development, Hans has traveled the world and had previously published non-fictional titles. The birth of his son and the subsequent parental leave provided him with the opportunity to unleash his creative writing once again. With little influence over his brain’s creative workings, he indulges it, going with the flow.A deeply rooted passion for, faith in a better world, in love, tolerance and diversity are a red thread throughout both his creative and non-fictional work. His novels might best be described as “literary romance, engaging characters and relevant stories that won’t leave you untouched, but hopeful.”Hans is a proud member of the Swedish Writers’ Union and the Writers’ Center in Sweden.
