Description/Blurb:

Is love worth betraying everything? Plunge into the second adventure in the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series and “prepare to be hooked” (Entertainment Weekly).

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go—especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil—and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings—and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City’s Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.

My Thoughts:

City of Ashes

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I am way behind on reading this series, I know, I know.

I had read the first when the movie had first come out, but then never got around to getting to the rest of it. Now I am wondering what had taken me so long.

I had been awfully careful to avoid reading other reviews so that I didn’t get throttled with spoilers, and now I almost wonder if some of the emotional blows would have come as less of a shock if I had been warned. Such a fine line to walk, indeed.

The action and adventure and emotional turmoil picks up where it left off in City of Bones. Clary’s mom’s condition is the same, and you have to wonder what is going to get blasted at these poor kids next.

Then, to endure so much, only to have everything turned upside down on you again and again. I cannot wait to see what more the author has in store.

The author paints a vivid picture and you will find yourself wondering what just happened, feeling like you need to re-read in case you missed something. A lot of the cliff hangers left me gasping. I didn’t see them coming, but I think maybe I should have.

Onward to the next book! Have you read City of Ashes? Let me know what you thought.
