The above creature is actually a caterpillar not a snake! It creates the illusion of looking like a dangerous reptile by retracting its legs and expanding the end of its body, which have markings that look like eyes. Professor Daniel Janzen captured the images as part of his work cataloguing caterpillars and says it is part of the hemeroplanes species. (Source)
I understand the mechanism but I am still baffled by this kind of thing…
At some point in its past it didn’t look like a snake, but then the babies with the right colouring and behaviour did?!
