This is one of the most powerful and amazing films I've seen in a long time. You could take it as hard-SF, as fantasy, or as social-commentary, it really depends on how you look at it. If you are an animal-lover like me, particularly with respect to dogs, the bulk of the film is very harrowing, be warned (but it's all fake - there is a nice big disclaimer in the start of the credits, bless them). But the story is awesome and the end is... wow.
