Today we leave Shanghai.

I am not looking forward to the flight, it’s crushingly long for us to get home (Shanghai to SF to Eugene, then ninety minutes to drive home). But worse yet is we are going to miss the friends we made here.

Our interpreter, Jo, our guest liason Erin, and superstar artist Billy Tan were all so amazingly generous and wonderful and warm.  And we keep saying it, even total strangers were ridiculously kind and lovely here. China has always been my favorite country to visit but we were completely unprepared for how beautiful and lively and moving Shanghai would be.

That’s the thing about these conventions, we always try to stay an extra couple days to see the area, and we could not possibly see even a tiny fraction of what Shanghai is about. But what a city, it’s gorgeous, the food is incredible, the people are warm and friendly, and we got to meet hundreds and hundreds of comics readers, mostly younger, mostly female, and see their fascination with American comics up close.

Incredibly privileged to have been invited here. It just makes me want to see more of China as soon as possible. I believe the con was a big success, so I hope they have lots, lots more. Because this is amazing to witness.

I know I have repeated myself a bit here but it’s overwhelming to experience. We are going to miss this place and the people here so, so much (and that one dim sum with the soup inside, holy moley that was good!).

Thank you to everyone here for being so kind. We will never forget it, nope, never.
