Chapter 4 of Curatorial Practice

is up on Patreon. A tiny excerpt (with an old friend!!) is below the cut. <3

“Oh my God,” Kitty said in lieu of a hello. “James, you old so and so, it’s been too long since we’ve talked! How are you?”

James smiled at the sound of his friend’s voice, shifting the phone as he unloaded the dishwasher. “Things at the gallery are good, really good actually.”

“Awesome and you still love Portland?”

“I still love Portland,” he confirmed. “It might even love me back just a little.”

“And how could it not? Peter and I will have to plan a visit soon. I miss you.”

James felt nostalgic tug in his chest. “How’s Peter? You guys just moved in together right?”

Kitty made a happy sound. “We did! Who knew he was serious boyfriend material? Maybe you did? Was this your plan all along, hmm?” She laughed. Honestly, James had never pictured them as a couple, but now that they were, it seemed to make all the sense in the world. “It’s kinda perfect, even if San Francisco isn’t. So many people have moved away, it makes me heartsick.”

“And a few have moved back too. Do you see much of Turkish these days?”

“James!” Kitty admonished. “What on earth do you want to rehash that for?”

“I don’t,” he rolled his eyes even though she couldn’t see. “But that didn’t stop him from showing up at my opening last week.”

“He didn’t,” she gasped. “Tell me everything.”

James cringed. Picking up Tripod and he headed up stairs. “Just…” He bit his lip. “You have seen him around right?”

“Yeah. In the usual places. He’s teaching now.”

“He told me. Look, Kitty, what I really want to know is if he’s happy?”
