REVIEW AND FREE BOOK ALERT! SOLATIUM by Becca Mills, sequel to Nolander (free just about everywhere: on Amazon, GooglePlay, B&N, Kobo, iBooks, Scribd & Oyster – read my review)

Okay, now down to business. I begged Becca Mills (who I did not know at the time) to beta for Solatium (i.e., I read the non-edited rough draft) ‘cause I loved Nolander so much. Nolander was one of those ebooks I found myself reading every waking moment of my day. You know how you get an ebook, and you think to yourself, “Gosh, I’m so glad this grocery line is taking forever because it means I’ll have more time to read and my husband can’t be mad that I’m taking so long. Bwahahahaha!”? Yeah, Nolander was like that.

At about 600 pages, Solatium is longer than Nolander, and I couldn’t read it on my Kindle because it’s old and apparently doesn’t like DOCX files. This means I had to read it on my computer.

I promised I’d get back to the author in a week.

It took me two days to read the story because I couldn’t tear myself away from my computer. My children were neglected, my husband was irritated (didn’t have long grocery lines to blame my life responsibilities negligence on).

I love this series. I look forward to the next book so much. The Emmanations Series is everything RIGHT about self-publishing: complex characters, fantastic plot with intrigue, magic, science (including one of the best “sciencey” explanations of multiple realms I’ve ever seen), and larger themes running right below the surface. I doubt a publisher would pick it up … it’s too rich, and too deep, but IT ISN’T BORING. And that’s what makes it everything right about Sci-Fi and Fantasy–the exploration of deep themes in not boring ways. That is what both genres are at their heart. I would classify this as “sci-fantasy”, it’s a cross-genre trend that is occurring in the self-publishing world that the major publishers seem to be missing.

To highlight the not-boring elements:

Humans aren’t helpless or ignored. The “non-magical” take an active role in this story, and human weapons aren’t completely useless (a trend I hate).

There are dragons.

Elf like creatures.

Immortals who don’t act “mortal”.

THERE ARE DINOSAURS. YAY!

The first book in this series, Nolander, is FREE, and this one ends at a satisfying spot, so you don’t have to wait until the series is finished to pick them up. They’re worth the read as they are.

Pick up Solatium on Amazon, iBooks, GooglePlay, B&N , Kobo, & Scribd.
