Is the Paper Towns Movie Like the Book? Thoughts on Adaptations

In which John discusses the Paper Towns movie adaptation, the idea of faithful adaptations, and the lost art of the movie novelization. Special attention is paid to the novelization of the film The Goonies.

Also, in a stunning turn of events, I find myself in an airport.

I thought they followed TFIOS way too closely. It wasn't enjoyable to me, because I already knew everything. . . I hope they change the movie somewhat.

ExpectingAmnesia A movie is a motion picture, a book is a piece of writing. Many things that can be expressed in books cannot be expressed in movies with out the addition and subtraction of a few things. I hope they don't change the movie too much.

I agree that it followed the TFIOS book very closely, but that is what I liked about the movie. There was no new information to throw you of course. If they had added new information then personally I would have hated the movie.

It's funny. Normally I get upset when movies change from the book. . . I guess I just wish they had added different lines some. Definitely shouldn't change the ending though.

But see my favorite part of the book was the lines and the voice of the characters, which I think is one of the thing book to movie adaptations are not very good at. With the TFIOS movie all of the characters voices and the way they spoke was pretty similar to the book.

I loved how they put actual lines from the book in the movie.

I do too. I would have been really upset if they had left out certain lines. However, I wish they would have added some "new" funny/thought provoking lines.

I don't know... I feel like yes they could have changed it up a LITTLE bit but to much changing and it completely changes the concept of the movie.

Yep. More than that though, I wish they would have filmed a bit better. The cinematography is what really bothered me about the movie. . . The editing was poorly done (in my useless opinion).

I'm not normally so critical of movies, but I had such high expectations for TFIOS.

I thought of an example of what I mean. If you've ever read and watched The Princess Bride, you would be delighted at how true and close the movie stayed to the book. However, there are certain scenes from the book left out of the movie, and the movie has completely new scenes added to it. What made that work so well was that William Goldman wrote both the book and the movie's screenplay. It was different, but 100% true to the story. Am I making any sense w/ that?

Yeah I totally understand. I do think they could have edited it better. So personally I have not read the Princess Bride but I loved the movie. But do you think you would have been less satisfied with the movie if he had not written the screenplay? Like if someone else had changed it?

It's hard to say, really. With such a classic movie, one would think that any different actors or actresses, let alone writers, would drastically change it. I can't say for certain, but I'm assuming it wouldn't be as good [with a different screenwriter]. It'd be weird to think about them doing a remake too.

Kate My friend likes to compare the making of a book to a movie to music videos. When you read a book you get to make up what everyone and everything looks like in your head but, when it's a movie it takes that away. And like when you're listening to a song, some people like to interpret it their own way, make their own music video in their head if you will but, the music video shows you something specific and takes away your creativity in thinking of ways that song could be interpreted. I'm not saying movies and music videos aren't good, I personally love both but, they take away a little bit of your own creativity on what things look like or how things are interpreted.

Nataly Muniz Dear movie director,

The movie was awesome... but it missed some important parts I wanted to see...but did not1.Were was Ben Starlings little joke or little happenings((specifically)the beer part).2.Why did Radar girlfriend go?3(and the biggest of all)WHY ON EARTH DID IT ALL HAPPEN BEFORE IT WAS SUPPOSE TO...(THEY ALL WENT TO LOOK FOR MARGO DURING PROM, AND NOT DURING GRADUATION!)MY question is why did you directors have to change? The email movie reminded me of when I read all the way Maze Runner books and saw the movie and was fairly disappointed again (I think that is all I have to say)

Anyhow, the book was too beautiful !

message 23: by Larisa (new)

Larisa I didn't like the movie at all. If only I'd first read the book! It spoiled everything: the sensitivity, the true meaning behind it, everything.
