Matt Smith to Portray Duke of Edinburgh in New TV Series?

And in a bit of unexpected casting news: it appears Matt Smith is going to play Prince Philip in an upcoming BBC drama!

The Crown is a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II’s 60+ year reign, and will play out across 20 episodes in two series. Matt is in final negotiations to portray the Duke of Edinburgh in episodes charting their marriage in 1947  to the earlier 1960s.

Claire Foy, who has previously starred in Wolf Hall as Anne Boleyn and in Upstairs Downstairs as Lady Persie, has already signed up as the Queen.

The series is written by Peter Morgan (The Queen; The Damned United) and directed by Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot; The Hours), and will examine the relationship between the Royals and 10 Downing Street. If successful, the show will expand to cover the Queen’s reign until present day, totaling 60 episodes – likely six series of 10 episodes – and will recast roles for their later lives.

We’ll find out if Matt has bagged the role when it begins filming in June.
