Last night's Game of Thrones

Here is Entertainment Weekly’s James Hibbard, giving a recap of last night’s Game of Thrones episode, followed by the New York Times review. As always, SPOILERS, so do not read if you’ve not yet seen the show. I will say only that they share our shock at the turn the series has taken away from the books when it comes to the unluckiest person in all of Westeros. (Naturally a Stark.) We all know Master Martin can be merciless when it comes to his characters—and his readers! But he now seems like Mother Theresa compared to the HBO writers.

Susan After the airing of last night's episode, I received 3 calls from avid Game of Thrones friends who are totally irate at the direction the writers are taking the show. No happy campers here.

Sharon I have my doubts, too, Susan. I like the way they are finally letting these separate story lines intersect; like letting Tyrion meet Danni, or so we hope. And I love the idea of sending Jaime and Bronn on a road trip to Dorne. But I hate what they are planning to do to Sansa.

Rebecca Finally am in my new home and a new PC! I also promised that I'd never, ever, never, everererer, buy another book!! I really meant it.....then;) like heck I wont lol.

When it comes to Sansa something horrific has to happen to make her realise that Littlefinger is not on her side....but I'm hoping that Brienne or Theon will save her in time...I'd hate to see Ramsay torture her or Myranda too! And coming so close to a fate worse than death will have her turn on LF-finally!

The one I fear for is Shireen.....that knowing glance between Mel & Selyse bodes ill for the poor little girl...but I loved the scene between her and Stannis.

Can't wait till ep5:D

Sharon Congratulations, Rebecca. It just be such a relief to be settled in and you'll probably never want to move again!
Maybe I am naïve, but I don't think HBO would dare to kill Shireen. Yes, Bran did get pushed out a window, but that came courtesy of GRRM and he did survive. But murdering that sweet little girl would be too much.

message 5: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Yes it is a real relief to finally be unpacked and everything in it's place especially my books & to be closer to my family.

I hope you're right about Shireen, she is such a sweet girl, but no-one is safe on GOT....Sophie Turner says something traumatic happens to Sansa this season...the girl watched her father get beheaded, her mother was murdered and her brother's head was placed on his direwolf and she thinks the rest of her family are also dead. I think what they may have planned for Sansa is also too much.....I really do close my eyes with that Ramsay guy, it is simply too much to watch; unbearable actually. Am I the only one to feel that the producers sometimes go too far with the torture/sadism?...I find his and Theon's scenes intolerable.....So let us both hope that both girls will escape the villians....*fingers crossed*....

Sharon I am so in agreement with you, Rebecca, about the Ramsey-Theon scenes. I hate them and hate every scene Ramsay is in. But we have to "blame" Master Martin for this, since the HBO writers are merely following him in that, the Ramsay-Theon sick dynamic coming right from the books.

message 7: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca I cringe every time those two are on screen and Alfie Allen leaked that their will be a very traumatic scene coming up that will out-do mad Joffrey....oh brother, I shall be closing my eyes again! I shall end up watching the entire show with a blind fold on LOL....

message 8: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Thanks for the warning, Rebecca. I'll start picking out my blindfold now.

Ivana The Sansa/Ramsay plot is completely absurd for a number of reasons. None of it makes any sense, and it's the worst example of what can happen when the showrunners put PlottyMcPlot and their desire to shock the viewers ahead of characterization and story logic.

It doesn't make any sense that Sansa can just marry again, when she's officially married to Tyrion. It doesn't make any sense that Sansa could marry a Lannister ally, without Cersei hearing about it and getting her brought to King's Landing ASAP to be executed for Joffrey's murder. It doesn't make any sense that Sansa is walking around Westeros without even trying to hide who she is. Book!Sansa is in hiding - that's the only reason why she's with Littlefinger, because she has nowhere to go and no one to trust; she knows that he at least won't turn her over to Cersei, even though she thinks to herself she would rather be far away from him if she could choose. She certainly doesn't need to be raped and tortured just so she could turn against Littlefinger. (And if anything, I think the revelation that he betrayed her father would be more than enough!)

Nobody's behavior makes any sense, and the show has just at best undermined, at worst destroyed at least three major characters - Sansa, Littlefinger and Roose Bolton, who are all acting in complete opposition of what kind of people they are. There's no way someone smart and calculated like Roose would do something as stupid and risky that would alienate the Lannisters, who are the only reason why he is Warden of the North. There's no way that Littlefinger would give away Sansa, his prized "possession", for both personal and political reasons, to the Boltons - for what? There's nothing he can gain by this! If he wants to assassinate one of the Boltons, why doesn't he do it? Sansa is not a Faceless Man or a ninja, how is she supposed to do anything about it?! All this does it put her in a terrible, dangerous situation. And it doesn't do anything for her! The supposed reasons for Sansa to marry Ramsay and put herself at the tender mercies of the Boltons are beyond stupid. She doesn't need to marry Ramsay to get Winterfell, she's the one with a legitimate claim to Winterfell! Why would she be legitimizing Ramsay's claim?! Why would she marry a Bolton, when they are despised by everyone who supports the Starks, and that marriage would only undermine her own position among Stark loyalists?! Why would she ever want to willingly marry into the family of her enemies and make herself prisoner again - after having finally escaped the same when she escaped KL? Book!Sansa, whose behavior makes sense, would never do it! And book!Littlefinger is a terrible person, but the one thing he is not is stupid. Show!Littlefinger is an idiot.

This is by far the stupidest, most absurd of all book changes Benioff and Weiss have made, and a sign that they're definitely losing the plot.

Rebecca LOL @ PlottyMcPlot.....I have to agree and plus it has no logic to it and it is poor story telling....We are into season 5 and I think many of us would love to see a Stark uprising, but instead we get more tortured Starks. And unlike the books we get no real insight into the characters and yes she is married to Tyrion who also happens to be married to Tysha; so there's a conundrum that has yet to be resolved....Jaime is in Dorne in er disguise as he tries to rescue Myrcella...but he is wearing a glove LOL(a little bit like Clark kent and his glasses)....but what really has disappointed me so far is the lack of the Stannis/Bolton battle for Winterfell....Something tells me that it will be a fizzer--probably due to cost constraints.....I suppose the producers can only do so much.....
