Who do you want to be?
Who do you want to be?
Everyone reacts differently in a crisis. Some people completely shut down, others hoard, and some are heroes. We don’t know which we’ll be when something bad hits, and I doubt some people like how they’ve behaved when it passes.
A small crisis happened in my community this last week. It was nothing major, and there was only minor damage, but I was amazed by the dynamic that I saw. Some people leaped into action, helping their neighbors in whatever they needed, moving from house to house to help those in need, while others sat back and berated several people in the community for their irresponsibility and lack of preparedness.
We experienced high winds. A force of nature. Some people were prepared, some weren’t. But that didn’t matter to either party (the heroes or the complainers). The heroes helped regardless of how much a person had prepared, and the complainers berated their neighbors no matter how much they may have, and in a lot of cases, did prepared You never know who you’ll be in this instance, but when several negative messages were taken down from a neighborhood social media page by the next morning, I think I know some of the people didn’t like how they’d behaved.
Everyone makes choices. Everyone HAS a choice. Who you’re going to be, how you react, is a choice. This applies not only to disasters, but in everyday life. Who you choose to be each day when you’re running late, who you choose to be when you’re exhausted and at your wits end, who you decide to be when someone has done something wrong against you… that’s your choice.
You only need to ask yourself… who do I want to be?
It’s simple to say it. I want to be a nice person. I want to help people in need. I want to be the person willing to jump in and help someone even if they hadn’t prepared. But the trick is, no matter who you say you want to be, it doesn’t matter without action. You have to work for it. You have to BE it. If you do that everyday, in every moment, you won’t have to wonder how you’ll react in a crisis or disaster. You’ll know. You decide if you’re the hero or the complainer.
Which do you want to be?
