Could stage falling Madonna have beaten pop star rival Kylie to a role in Doctor Who? According to actress Yasmin Bannerman (Jabe the respresentative of the Forest of Cheem in 2005’s The End of the World and more recently the audio personification of New Adventures companion Roz Forrester with Big Finish) the answer is yes.
“At the time there was a lot of talk about who would play Cassandra. There was even talk that they’d approached Madonna,” she told Doctor Who Magazine.
It true – and we’ve no reason to believe the Material Girl – this would have occurred while the singer/songwriter/actress/style icon was residing in the UK and just a couple of years after her… interesting performance in Die Another Day, the 40th anniversary James Bond movie.
In the end, of course, the role was filled by veteran character actress Zoe Wanamaker, who effortlessly brought three dimensional life to the “bitchy trampoline.” But how might Madonna have portrayed the arch manipulations of Lady Cassandra, the last pure-born human in the stunning second episode of Doctor Who Series 1?
