Publishing scams deals: what are you really getting for your money

more-legit-gr8er-writing-tips:

I’ve done this on other forums before, but I think I ought to talk about this here too.

There are a bunch of ways somebody can publish and it can be confusing for young writers. Many not-too honest publishing houses are out there ready to take advantage of the writers who doesn’t really understand how publishing usually works.

Roughly speaking, you can publish commercially/traditionally or you can self-publish. There are many ways to do either, but I want to talk about a specific branch of self-publishing that is known as vanity publishing. Where it gets complicated is when vanity publishers start hijacking the term “traditional publishing” or refuse to call themselves that and either go for “self-publishing” or make up terms like “subsidy publishing”. If you’re confused, go back to this rule: never hand a publisher any money. Money goes from their bank account to yours, never the other way around. NEVER. Even if you do self-publish. There are plenty of free self-publishers out there and they have a better reputation than any pay-to-play publishers.
