I have had the usual bad publishing luck (editors departing and leaving books orphan) and some unusual bad luck with my books (as, publishing a book just after 9-11), but never, never, never have I had the post office burst open my well-taped box of first-pass galleys--carefully marked by me, the register and work of many days--and
