Wow...ok I don't know what to say. On one hand I feel sad because I'm a fan and will miss you, but on the other hand, I envy your courage to grab life by the horns. Good for you...only one life to live!
I enjoy your writing and not a particular theme per se. More over, hearing that you are happy is wonderful. My desire for a book of yours should not come with the price of your misery. Do what you want. Be happy. Enjoy life. If you write, I will read.
Congratulations for the job and for the freedom to write exactly what you want to write. It sounds great.
Congrats Alex! Money does provide some freedom. Sounds like a time of growth (personal/professional) and consolidation(priorities). Very happy for you. =)Best wishes to you and yours!!!!
Congrats on the new job Alex. It sounds like you are going to do something that you really like doing and still gives you the best of both worlds. I just got a job myself this week. One that, in contrast, leaves me with lots of time but I am no writer.
Sofia - Thank you!Lee - Thank you! I know it might be a shock, but it's NOT a retirement. It just means more books like Skybound, Return on Investment and the Bird Book - though slower. The weird stuff that doesn't really fit in to the "standard gay romance formula". I'm also now free to write hetero books and mainstream books and whatever else that captures my interest. I think it'll mean great, weird books. I'm looking forward to it and am a lot more positive about my writing future than I've been in two years.
Jan - Thank you!
Vivian - Yes, thankfully, "my" readers are usually an eclectic, well-read and rounded bunch. I'm definitely going to write - writing is like breathing, I'd struggle to imagine life without it.
Ije - Thanks! It'll be great!
Reggie - Thanks! Definitely growth and consolidation. As I said in a comment on my blog, I've recently realised I've reached every writing-related goal I had. Feels very much like setting new goals, so that's what I did, and those goals are leading me in this general direction. I'll be good to return to "playing" again.
Ingrid - Thank you! I'm maybe an odd bird, but I enjoy financial research, and I like the environment that bank offers overall. And congrats on the new job! If you want to fill that free time with writing, I'd have recommendations for books you could read. :)
Congrats on the new career! I hope everything develops just like you wish and it's great to be able to do something you like. Enjoy!
Aleksandr wrote: "It just means more books like Skybound, Return on Investment"Since these are two out of three that I've already read of your books, I'm super happy that there will be more like these. I DID SO LOOOOOVE THEM BOTH!
And I can't quite fathom yet how mind-blowing your books will be when you only write what you want and your muse is telling you ;-)

^^^^^^^^^ this.
Aaaaaaaaand this. >>>>>>>> "The nice thing is that the bank job means I can afford to write books like that. It'll be a huge relief to not have to plan my release schedule or genres according to what sells and might allow me to pay the mortgage. It also means if a book needs a year or two, I have that time while I'm employed."
Congratulations again on snagging the job, so fantastic. And I agree, your patient partner definitely deserves the time you have lol :D
Also, uhhhhhhh, I kinda got all atwitter when said "horror". I don't care if it's a decade from now, I'm reading that sucker lol.
Yay congrats!! You got it!! Yes I was one of those worried readers but hey that's ok no deadlines as long as you are not ever going to release it gives us readers hope!! I know how you will be bombarded and adjusting for a while and just don't give up your hobby cause we love you!! Best wishes hun!! From one your favorite eclectic fans :~)
No, you can't leave...not yet...not when I've just discovered you! *pout* Your work is...damn, there's no way to describe it other than 'effin brilliant'!On a less selfish note *wink*: I wish you nothing but success and joy in whatever you pursue!
Most warmly,
JLT =)
@Kimberly - Thanks! The chances of me stopping writing altogether are zero. I love it too much, I've written for close to 30 years. Characters talk to me. Scenes pop in my head. I basically can't help it.
@Joseph - Well, I have a sizeable backlist you can plow through until I get a new book out. (Also, for the record, a big historical novel is scheduled for October, and I hope I'll publish something else this year that's currently half-written). Thank you!
*nods* I'm makin' my way through that awesome list, Sir. I read (on audio) Dark Edge Of Honor a few years back - amazing! (Which reminds me, I need to leave a rating...I'd read it long before I'd even heard of GR.)I've also recently read the Dark Soul series - yeah, effin' brilliant!
And, I'm currently about 2/3 the way through Special Forces. I don't say this lightly - I'd call it the best m/m book I've ever read!
Any chance at all that I'll have the pleasure of meeting you at GRL this year? (It's my first time attending and I've registered as a Reader...the thought of registering as a writer scared the beejesus out of me. *grins*)

Congratulations on that new job! It is so important to spend your days doing something you love. As for your writing, well, I - as a reader - much prefer reading books that were written with the author's full attention and love and enthusiasm, and not with a worried eye on the deadlines and the editors' expectations, for it will show in the writing. I don't expect authors to spit out book after book on a bi-annually basis, I'm quite willing to wait.As for the romance issue you mentioned... speaking for myself, I actually prefer books that have plot and character development first and romance second. And I can't see why you shouldn't be able to write a "straight" book. You're a good writer with a very creative mind, and you always do meticulous research. I'm sure that a straight book by you will be just as great to read as the m/m ones you've already written.
So, yay you :-) Your fans will have your back, I'm sure of it.
@Joseph - Thank you. I love Dark Edge (and hope to do another one or two with Rhi). Regarding GRL, that's sadly very unlikely. Last year I just didn't have the spare cash (flight, hotel, con, food easily comes to $2,000-2,500 for me, and I didn't really have that lying around due to being out of a day job, and this year when the registration opened, that fundamental financial situation hadn't changed yet, so no, not this year, sadly.
I'm hoping next year, but then it depends on whether I get the time off. I'm going back to work in a bank, and then it depends on coordinating with the team and results season. I will be at the European cons, which are much cheaper for me and closer.
Also - don't be scared of GRL. It's huge fun, all the people are lovely. It's really about the community. One tip, though. If you have any level of social anxiety, be kind to yourself - don't overload your program, take the time and hang out at the bar for casual chats. I find that helps me and some friends to stay sane and unfrazzled through that week. :) I'm sure you'll have a ball!
@Silvia - Thank you! I'm hoping that it didn't show in the writing (I've written both very stressed and very relaxed, and usually after a few years I can't tell the difference once the memory is gone), but generally, I think you take more risks if you're not worried about sales, and for me writing is a lot about exploring my own mind and the things that fascinate me - I'd write even without any kind of audience, but of course it's a huge thrill to reach people with the things I write. But writing isn't just like any other old job, if that makes sense. :)And yes, I love plot and stuff going on. I need it to get me through a project too, because I get too bored otherwise. I'm stuck on two contemporary erotic romances and about ready to chuck it in and do something completely different. Plot is a huge factor.
Thank you for the vote of confidence!
