Switchlock is honestly the most realistic representation of what their actual sex life would be. Very few gay friends and family I have identify as either a top or a bottom 100% of the time. I have had a lot of sexual preference discussions with my friends, as friends tend to do, and most gay men I know do not have an identification as either one. Couples may have preferences, but it’s an incredibly narrow and rigid reading of Sherlock’s character to say that he would never ever top. Or that John would never bottom. Or vice versa, that Sherlock would always top and John would always bottom.
Also, it’s totally pointless to argue about, since their sex life exists explicitly only in fanon. And always will. There’s no canonical “proof” for either side. There is plenty of good and in character fics that have both and I’m tired of both sides arguing over this. It’s fucking exhausting to those of us who have a more flexible pov on their characterisation and sexuality. Tbh it’s a big part of what drives me away from tumblr sometimes. Because it’s just a circular, and frankly useless, argument that usually ends up making someone feel like shit.
Sherlock can top and still be in character. He can bottom and be in character. Same goes for John. If you have preferences of reading one over the other in fic, that’s understandable and totally cool. What isn’t cool, or true, is claiming that your personal preference is the objectively and inarguably accurate portrayal of that character and that anyone who disagrees misunderstands the character.
I’m just really fucking done with this bottomlock v toplock, bottomjohn v topjohn argument. It’s all fine. Let’s move past this.
YES. This is what I say over and over ad over and over again. To say that any queer man would be 100% top or bottom is simply ignorant and makes you look like someone who fetishizes queer men without actually knowing anything about them. I also agree that it’s a stupid, pointless argument that I find one of the most frustrating aspects of this fandom, honestly. I may have a SLIGHT leaning (which, if you’re someone who reads my stories, you’ll note) - but I will never EVER write them only one way or the other.
Secondly, and I’m repeating myself again, but the notion that physical top = dominant and physical bottom = submissive is also the shallowest possible interpretation of the dynamics involved. What if your top is a virgin being calmly and decisively led through his first time by the man he’s penetrating? What if he’s topping because said bottom gave him permission to, invited him to? Who’s the “dominant” one there? And why are we so determined to make one “dominant” and one “submissive”? How much longer do we have to go on button-holing and stereotyping before we just see two people having sex?
