Is self-Publishing a good option?

It’s estimated that a reputed online marketplace has earned over $8 billion from eBooks so far this year. For entrepreneurs, this is an opportunity to add income to your business.

But the problem lies in the fact that there are thousands books self-published every year in India alone. This has spawned an entire industry aimed at those wanting to self-publish a book. It’s also made it very difficult for your book to stand out and sell copies.

Self-publishing is not easy. Self-publishing has opened many doors and taken away the gate keepers but don’t think it is easy. With a major publisher you write the book and the publisher handles the ins and outs of creating the book. With self-publishing, that all falls on you.

It’s really hard to sell books.

If you self publish, you pay all the costs for creating printed, bound copies of your book. And you are completely responsible for advertising the book and attracting buyers and readers. You might get to keep most of the money from each sale, but that depends on the details of your contract with the self-publishing company you choose.

If you go the traditional publishing route, the publishing company pays for printing and binding your book, distributing it to bookstores, and advertising it. In return, they keep most of the money from each sale. But since there are likely to be lots more sales, your small percentage might add up to a lot more money than you’d make from self publishing.
