Project Solaris

It’s been tough waiting for readers to get back to me about No Mere Zombie. I gave them until the 25th, and initially thought I’d use February to work on Vampires Don’t Sparkle. This worked for a while, and I finished the first 25,000 words (about 100 pages), but I kept running into problems.

The plot could still change in book 2 based on reader feedback, so it makes it hard to complete book 3. On Friday I decided to take a little break and work on the prologue for a companion series to Deathless. It has familiar faces like Trevor and our friends at Mohn corp, but it deals with The Builders instead of everyone’s favorite undead.

Here’s a sneak peek at the rough draft for the blurb. Does this sound like something you’d read? I hope so, because I’ve cranked out a staggering 50,000 words over the last week. I like the premise, I like writing in the first person and I love the super powers:

It’s X-Files meets Heroes.

Project Solaris

I write software at a startup in Silicon Valley, where Google is king and Elon Musk holds court. I have my dream job, but I also have a secret.

We are not alone. The last time I was taken I was fourteen. Three weeks ago I had my twenty-eight birthday, and part of me knows that they will soon come again.

I devoted my life to technology so I’d be ready when they returned. Others have prepared too, and I will find them. Together we will harness the abilities they have given us.

We are Project Genesis. It’s time to fight back.

Chris It will never happen again haha. Total time to write the novel will be 13 days. Should be done Friday =)

R.M. Webb I'm in awe. Well done!

Chris Thanks! I'm in shock. I have never, ever written like this before. I still have no idea how people do this every month like some of the people on Kboards. Maybe it I didn't have a day job.

R.M. Webb Ya, I'm constantly amazed at the word counts flying around KBoards. Me? I'm slow. And it kills me. I don't know if I'll speed up with time or if I'll just have to make peace with creeping along at a pace that would make a snail feel like an Olympic sprinter.

Chris I'm finding it comes down to standards. Previously my daily count was 2,000, and I made sure I hit it. After I went on my mad binge I raised that to see if I could hit 5,000 a day. Turns out I can, though it takes another hour.

I also started using Freedom to shut off the internet while I write. Helps a TON.

R.M. Webb See, I tried writing for speed with my current WIP. I just wrote. I didn't edit as I went. I just plowed ahead. Problem was, I wasn't working from a strong outline, so I plowed ahead into serious stupid-dom. Even though I finished the original rough draft on November 30, I'm still not done. I had to rewrite huge chunks of the middle and the entire end.

Next time, I'll try having a SOLID outline before I push forward like that. I really want to write fast, but not if that means I'm putting out work I'm not proud of, you know?

It's all about learning and growing. :)

Chris Yes! I think that's what I most enjoy about writing.Every time we write something we're learning.

I've learned the hard way to always have an outline now. I write the ending, plot backwards to the beginning and then write forwards.

Sometimes characters surprise me though, and the plot changes unexpectedly.

Looks like Facade is doing well here, by the way.
