It's Turkey Time
Hmmm, can you smell it? Mashed potatoes, turkey, gravy, green beans, cranberries, pumpkin pie and I could probably continue writing all night and making myself very hungry. If you can't tell, I'm super excited by Thanksgiving. I think about how it has evolved over the years and the fact that I now get to participate in the making of the food. It's funny as we grow older just how much we understand the significance of this holiday. Not just in its beginnings but in the realization that there is much to give thanks for—at least I feel that way even if I do give off the occasional grumble about life.
I can recall going over to my parent's friend's house year after year. The same families, the same friends, all coming together to give thanks. You really get a concept of time when those sitting at the "kid's" table are now in their thirties and we've now built in another smaller table for the "little kids".
Like little eager beavers we still happily march to the serving line, pile our plates high and gorge ourselves into sleepiness. Then we roll ourselves over to the living room to watch the yearly broadcast of Home Alone. Sounds sloth-like but I love every minute of it.
Thanksgiving is like the starting bell to the season of giving and stepping up to lend a helping hand to others. It reminds us of what we do have and unites us with friends and family. So as you hunker down to cook those yummy meal, remember to enjoy your turkey day and its traditions, I will certainly being doing the same. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
