Interview with Sweet Surrender Author Maddie Taylor
Join me in welcoming Maddie Taylor to the blog today for Friends on Friday. We’re talking about her new book, Sweet Surrender.
What was the inspiration behind this book?
Sweet Surrender is book 2 in my Sweet Series. Mostly, I wanted to write a few stories set in my hometown, which is the Detroit area. They say write what you know, yes? So of course, my heroine had to be a nurse (like me), a curvy girl (like me) and a redhead (also like me, um… year, depending on if I’ve been to the salon ). I also can have that fiery temper, which is a stereotype, but in my case, very true. I don’t have the daddy issues that Jess had thank goodness, but I like to throw in drama based on emotional stresses that all of face in life. The psych nurse in me just has to, plus working in the field for twelve years gave me a lot of material and insight into how real folks deal.
Which character spoke to you the most while you were writing this book or which was you favorite?
Jessie, because there is a lot of me in her.
When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
Hm… that’s tough. I’ve always been a reader and often, while reading a story would think, it would have been so much better he did this, or the story would have really been 5-stars if the author had just done that, and I could do this (write a book). I also have a very active imagination and desperately needed an outlet. It wasn’t until the last decade that I put some of my ideas down on paper. Once I’d compiled a file full of potential plots, I finally took the plunge and wrote Captain My Captain. It was a giant leap and I didn’t think at the time anyone would want to read it, let alone publish it. Boy, am I glad someone did (Blushing Books). Now, 17 books later, I actually feel like I’ve made the switch from reader to author.
Tell us about your favorite atmosphere for writing.
Definitely, silence while in my den, sitting in my big cushy chair and a half. Cleo, my cat is usually camped out on my chest, which is a challenge, but she is sweet and cuddly so I deal. In the winter, I’m wearing my fuzzy slippers, have my Komfy Kabin fleece throw on my lap and a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows and/or whipped cream at my fingertips. Summertime includes floating in my blowup floaty with both cup holders filled with a lemon drop or a strawberry margarita (to stimulate the imagination, or course.)
Tell us about your “discipline” for writing. Are you consistent – writing at the same time every day or do you write in spurts and stops? How do you balance writing with the rest of your life?
Oh, Normandie, I wish I didn’t have to admit it, but I am undisciplined. I have no routine. I write when I can around my 40+ hour/week day job and living life with my hubby of more years than I care to admit. I’m often burning the midnight oil, way into the wee hours and hubby doesn’t seem to mind. I do get spurts that I call writing frenzies, sometimes writing 10-15K in a weekend, or more. I love those frenzies until life interferes or I poop out—why do I have to poop out??? Fortunately, I haven’t had a slowdown period yet, and I hope I never do. I keep a notebook with me and jot down ideas when I have them, which is often while driving for some reason. Currently, I have 18 different story lines waiting for me in my book idea folder; so many stories, so little time.
Do you have any preferred resources that you use for writing?
Um… Should I be embarrassed to say that I have never heard of any of those things? Now I’ll have to google them.
Do you have a project in the works that you’d like to tell us about?
Second Time Lucky, Club Decadence Book 5 is nearly done. After that, book 3 in my Silverbend series, because Luke’s story is screaming at me to be written, so back to 1878 I will happily go.
What is your favorite way to promote one of your books?
Thanks for asking. Currently, I’m on a blog tour. You are stop #4. Along with great interviews and hot excerpts, I’m giving away free books and gift cards for those who come along on the tour with me. Here is the link for details:

What are you reading right now?
Next in line on my kindle… Smolder by L. Wilder. Yep, I confess to having a thing for motorcycle men.
Are you an introvert or an extravert?
I think I’m a little of both. While quite social, talkative and outgoing, I also like to stay at home and nest, sometimes hibernating for a weekend. Me and my husband have pajama days sometimes, which are the best. Often they come in the fall, on Saturday, during college football season, but heck a day to bum around in your jammies, is awesome.
What food or drink could you not live without?
Drink: Diet Mountain Dew
Food: Mexican. Too broad? My homemade chicken enchiladas with cream cheese, green chilies and chicken overstuffed in tortilla shells then covered with heavy cream, cheddar cheese and red enchilada sauce. Mm… once baked, the cream turns thick like a creamy Alfredo sauce. To. Die. For!
If you had to be stranded on a desert island – who is the one person you’d like to be stranded with, and what one luxury item would you like to have with you?
That’s easy: my husband (the love of my life) and an unlimited supply of sunscreen. As I mentioned, I’m a redhead and am very fair, so I fry in the sun.
If you could be any animal what would it be? Why?
My cat. People say dogs have the life, but Princess Cleo has it all. A wonderful home, lots of toys to play with, cuddles and snuggles whenever she wants, doing as she pleases anytime (did I mention, she’s a cat?), and when it snows 5 inches with a layer of ice, she doesn’t have to go outside to pee. Okay, the litterbox thing is gross, but it beats having to go out in -11 degree temps, which is what they are calling for here tomorrow, and I live in the south! So, it’s a cat’s life for me.
What is something readers would be surprised to learn about you?
Maybe the motorcycle man fetish that I listed above. I also read vanilla romance quite often. I admit I often think, this would be a great place for a spanking, however.
Sweet Surrender
Abandoned by her father at a young age, Jessie Swanson swore she’d never again depend on any man, let alone someone with Dr. Marc Trent’s reputation as a player. Upon being assigned to work a shift as Marc’s nurse, she vows to keep things entirely professional, but when the darkly handsome surgeon asks Jessie to dinner her promises prove no match for his golden-brown eyes.
One date turns into another, and then another, and the better Jessie gets to know Marc, the more his take-charge personality appeals to her. She soon finds herself craving his dominance in the bedroom as well, and when he takes her over his knee, bares her bottom, and spanks her long and hard, she is left blushing and begging for more. But after Jessie learns that Marc’s mother and sisters are unhappy about their match, she retreats into her work, sure that a girl who used to call a trailer park home can’t possibly have a future with someone like him.
When Marc puts his foot down about Jessie’s excessive overtime hours and her failure to take care of herself properly, things come to a head. Jessie decides to move on rather than risk losing her independence to a man she fears will one day cast her aside, but Marc doesn’t give up easily. Will the wounds of Jessie’s past keep them apart forever, or can Marc prove to her that he is not only a man she can depend on, but one worthy of her surrender?
Publisher’s Note: Sweet Surrender is a stand-alone sequel to Sweet Salvation. It is a full-length erotic romance novel that includes spankings, sexual scenes, medical play, anal play, elements of BDSM, and more. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.
Excerpt
His hand abandoned her and he shifted slightly. In her heightened state, the slight scraping of the wooden hairbrush on the nightstand sounded like thunder in her ears. When it landed with a loud crack, the sound reverberated loudly in the room, as did her high-pitched yelp of surprise. It didn’t deter him in the least as he brought the brush down in repetitive fashion on first one cheek and then the other. It was worse than the spatula, which wasn’t solid wood; the ‘S’ carved into the wood lessened the intensity, perhaps. It was worse than the belt; old and broken in like the wet noodle he’d spoken of, it seemed insignificant now, but maybe the memory had faded over time. The small wooden hairbrush was worse than his palm; with less area, the blow was more concentrated and it stung like a mother—
The next blow interrupted her flow of thoughts, as jagged and disjointed as they were and her yelp became strident.
“Are you okay, baby?” he asked without pause.
“It really stings.”
“Good. Remember this. It will be worse if you ever think to run from me again, leaving a note, ignoring my calls, not coming to the door when I come to see you. You’re twenty-eight; I expect you to act like the adult you are, the professional with a shit-ton of responsibilities weighing upon your shoulders, with the lives of patients in your hands. With all that, which you handle adeptly, I expect you to be able to come to your man when something is bothering you. Understand?”
As he’d spoken, he’d laid down a barrage of spanks, the staccato of the brush matching the emphasis of his words. Her butt was ablaze with scorching heat as she called out, “Yes, sir, I understand.”
With four more swats, two each applied to the uppermost aspect of her thighs, where the curve of her bottom began, he was done. She knew this from the clatter of the brush on the nightstand, or the floor. Either way, it was over and his hand returned, the coolness of his skin soothing immediately. He then sat her upright, rolling her onto her hip and cradling her against his chest.
“It’s over, cara. All is forgiven and we move forward from here.”
