Why I'm afraid of the Bourbon Kings

Okay, so rolling up to the July 28th release of the first book in my newest series (THE BOURBON KINGS,) I know I'm supposed to talk about how fabulous the book is, how much people are going to like it, how great the world building is, etc., etc., etc., how my readers should jump into the...

Blah, blah, blah.

Look, the sh*t doesn't suck, okay?

Let's just get that out of the way up front. (Oh, and in case you're wondering, that's about as much praise I give my own work lol, so take the statement with that in mind.)

Yes, I love the BOURBON KINGS. Of course, I do. I wrote the book from the heart, and I want to write the other books in the series because I see them so clearly and so urgently that it takes me back to DARK LOVER days.

But I'm sh*t terrified.

And the truth is, that's the way it SHOULD be.

I've been successful at this writing gig so far. I've worked my a&& off, true, but I've also had that intangible, magical luck that sometimes you get, and sometimes you don't. As I've always said, there are writers FAR more talented than I who are struggling for no good reason I can see simply because...

Well, see that's why I'm terrified. I'm not sure I understand why the BDB worked so well. If I did, if there was some sort of mathematical equation to define success, if I could say YES I'm back in the sweet spot with this idea... then maybe I wouldn't be so scared.

But that's not the nature of this business.

DARK LOVER came out ten years ago this September. I can remember when I sent in the proposal for the series to my then agent- I was in tears at the post office. (This was back in the old days before everything was emailed in.) I was convinced the story was too out there, that no one was going to relate to the material (Marriage ceremony involving scarification? Sure! Hero who almost kills the heroine's buddy who's a cop in front of her? Why not! Secondary hero who turns into a dragon unless he f**ks women? What the hell!), and that I was going to lose the chance to write the rest of the stories.

That's how I feel about the Bourbon KINGS.

See, what's cool, but also scary, about this business is that you have to earn your stripes with readers every single time you put a book out there. No matter how "big" your name is, you can't get away from that reality- nor should you. The world doesn't owe you a pat on the head because you "birthed" "the book of your heart." Your friends care. Your family care. And that's about you- and PS, that kind of support really matters in life.

But as a professional writer, it's not about you.

(N.B.: I need to sideline here and say that I have a ton of writer friends who preach this gospel, too- and I see a TON of other writers in this market believing it as well- even if I don't know them personally, every time they release something, it's as good if not even better than the already great stuff they're putting out.)

As an analogy, not that you're stupid by any stretch and can't extrapolate on your own, say Coke started putting crap in its red and white cans? It might get away with that for day or two. Maybe a week. But pretty soon? Everyone's buying Pepsi. Or Snapple. Or drinking water from the sink.

This is what I think of every time I get tired at the computer, or want to get lazy, or think, meh, maybe I'll have someone else do my galleys.

Which is not to say I'm a saint or a machine or setting myself up as some perfect example. I f**ked up the end of V's book, for instance. I wish I'd left more on the page for Lover Unleashed. The Fallen Angels series was a great intellectual puzzle for me, but was low on emotion. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

Readers are right to pick and choose because romantic notions of writing aside, they're buying a product and nobody wastes money on something that is only a brand. Brands exists because they mean quality- but if that goes away? Then the market goes away.

(N.B. Okay, Keeping Up with the Kardashians disproves this theory. But work with me.)

Back to the Bourbon Kings.

I came up with the idea for the series about five, six years ago- and I toyed with it on my off hours for so long, checking out the pictures I got in my head, wondering about where the stories were going to go, trying to tease out whether there was enough meat in there.

I got the meats, yo. Just in case you were wonderin'.

When I pitched the concept to my publisher, they hopped right on board, and I gotta say, I love my editor. I have poured over this manuscript over and over again, tweaking, refining... leaving it all on the page.

The thing goes into copyedits next Tuesday.

Naturally, I want to vomit.

The BOURBON KINGS is a different series than the BDB in some ways-for example, if there's blood shed, it's not because someone's hungry. And if there's a scent of baby powder around, it's because someone's burping an infant on their shoulder. At its core, though, you have a group of people confronted with a series of monumental problems that require them to either band together... or sink like a stone.

There's even a guy with a lot of scars. (And before anyone asks, yes, Edward is my favorite. And yes, he pays for sex. And yup, he's in love with a woman he's not involved with. And uh-huh, she has her own issues. Whyyyyyyy whyyyyyyyy do I always love the complicated hurt ones the most???)

And so I'm scared of the BOURBON KINGS in the same way I was scared of DARK LOVER. I want the opportunity to write the whole series- whether it's six books (like my Fallen Angel series) or open ended and forever like the BDBs- and that is only going to happen if readers embrace the people, the places, the stories.

And I have no control over that.

Nor should I.

That's the readers' sacred space. That's theirs and their alone: Just as I had my private time with the material where they weren't welcome (when I was writing it all,) readers who get the book are entitled to their private experience. It's their right, and their privilege, and I respect the sh*t out of that boundary.

See, that's the other thing that's interesting about this business. Even though the Coke analogy works on some levels, writers are not manufacturing machines. I can only write what I'm shown- as I've often said, I'm not smart enough to think this stuff up. The stories come or they don't, and my job is to describe what I'm shown sufficiently so that a reader can get close enough to touch what's in my head. I'm not allowed to have an opinion of the material- if I change things, the voices and pictures go away and I'm left with nothing- so I get when readers are sometimes frustrated with the way things go. I get frustrated, too.

However, I can only work with what I got. And I judge my job on whether I got it on the page right. I do not allow myself to go any further than that- just as readers are allowed their sacred space, I need to have mine.

When it comes to the BOURBON KINGS, I wrote what I was shown, and I gasped, and I cried, and I laughed, and I ahhhhhh'd along the way. If I did my job, hopefully some readers will hop on board and come along for the ride. That would be great. That would be awesome!

I would get a good night sleep for at least an evening or two (until I get another wasp in a bathroom ceiling fixture.)

But no one knows what people are going to think. And that's what keeps me on my toes. And makes me grateful for the people who love my books enough to spend their hard earned money on them. It would be an honor to get to keep writing the BKs. That's my dearest hope.

But not my expectation.

And there's a world of difference between the two.

Jeez, just like the old days, huh?

Happy Reading! And thank you!

Donna Bossert you just continue to write and we will continue to read!If the BK is anywhere near as epic as the BDB then its going to be a hit!

message 2: by Julie (new)

Julie Hi, I love your books and am looking forward to this new adventure. Thank you.

message 3: by Naomi (new)

Naomi Good luck with the new series. I am confident, that even if the books are not for all your readers of the brotherhood series, there will be other readers interested in reading the new series. I read a lot of books, and I have to admit, I was a little surprised at how much I ended up loving the brotherhood series. I tried them once, thought they were not for me. Tried again, and fell in love! I tried a second time because so many fellow urban fantasy readers kept suggesting them.
I also learned something about you. You are a really good story teller, and isn't that why so many of us read? A good story....I look forward to the New series, along with many more Black Dagger Brotherhood books.

message 4: by Billie (new)

Billie Ballard Tussey I just want to say that you are my all time favorite author! I read at least a book a day..sometimes two and I love your books. I started my reading addiction with BDB and I was hooked! Loved the angels! I believe I have read everything you have out there even with your alter! I am so excited for this new series! I scramble to get books from you and KMM. Keep writing, your stuff is the best! Between you and Karen I read the books so fast and then im lost till the next one! Im sure this series will be awesome too!
thank you for the hard work you put into each book, it shows!

message 5: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Trolenberg Sorry the worry/hope/stress monster makes you want to vomit. You yourself said it doesn't suck, so I'm gonna trust you on that, since, you know, nothing else I have read with your name on it has been anything less than awesome. So there's that...I believe that it will live up to your fantastic-ness and now please don't vomit.

message 6: by Trish (new)

Trish Good luck J.R.! I admire you for always keepin' it real. I for one will definitely be checking out the new series. I would have anyway, but now that you've mentioned Edward...well...how could we not. Sounds like typical J.R. to me - and I mean that as high high praise.

message 7: by Anjee (new)

Anjee I am positive it will be great! Keep your head up!

Even V, You had a hard time with him but you love him.. it shows.. and it will show in these books too.. I read your books so much they fall apart and I buy more.. I have others hooked on your books as well.. So.. Write on.. Cause I will read..

message 10: by A.J. (new)

A.J. Norris As an aspiring author myself, I'm relieved that even a seasoned author like yourself gets scared. It's always makes me want to vomit when someone else reads my stuff. Like what if they don't like it? or they just don't get it?

I love your books and look forward to this series and I'm sure you don't have anything to worry about.

message 11: by Casey (last edited Feb 09, 2015 09:36AM) (new)

Casey Dearest Fave Author,
I look forward to curling up with the BK. I will try my hardest to love them, though not much ranks as high as the BDB.

Sincerely,
Me :)

message 12: by Rosa (new)

Rosa Morales You are a talented writer, I would buy and read anything you wrote. I have to say I've read a lot of books and have never cared about fictional characters the way I care about the BDB characters..they are real to me and that's a testament to your writing skills. I've pre-ordered BK and I have no doubt it will be great. Thanks for doing what you do!!

message 13: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary I will be first to admit ( with sincere apologies) the fallen angels series wasn't my cup of tea. But I did read try them. Because it is YOU writing them, I will try the BK's too. The buzz I have read is positive. And the only way to know if it will work is to try it! Mad props to you for putting it on the line!!!

message 14: by Brandy (new)

Brandy Creech As I'm re-re-re-reading (lost count) Dark Lover - at Beth's transition right now - I'm patiently awaiting the release of the Bourbon Kings (and the Shadows too). I have to wholeheartedly agree with Kathie above...you write - we'll read...simple as that. Even though you're terrified, we aren't...we KNOW it will be good, because it's coming from you! And we LOVE YOU for that!

Vickie Simply...............If you write, we will read.

Christy I've read all your books and I have not been disappointed with any of them. I can hardly wait to enter the world of The Bourbon Kings with you! I know this new endeavor will be just as successful as the BDB and FA.

Bring on The Bourbon Kings!

message 18: by Rachel (new)

Rachel So excited for this series!!

message 19: by Janna (new)

Janna Morrow I will read the books. I am a huge fan and you can count on my support. That being said, I have not loved every book you have written, but I am still a fan at the end of the day. Really, I go to the BDB whenever I need some comfort. Your books got me through those nights when my baby would not sleep. I can count on you to produce great stuff!

message 20: by Betty (new)

Betty Jones I am looking forward to the new series, and I can hardly wait. Thank you for giving me something to look forward to.

message 21: by Debbie (new)

Debbie First of all, I think you're worrying about nothing and that your new book will be as fantastic as all of your other masterpieces but if not I believe that your die hard fans wouldn't allow one not so fantastic book stop them from purchasing future books, so I say give yourself a break and enjoy the mystery of the unknown. I personally can't wait for the BK release and will always want more BDB no matter what! You are so entertaining I even look forward to your blog posts! Good luck!

message 22: by Amy (new)

Amy Lavene Looking forward to reading the BK. I know it will be great. As long as you keep writing I will keep on reading.

message 23: by Jacqui (new)

Jacqui I have all the Faith in the World in you and that BK will be awesome. It might not be for everyone, but you put your heart and soul in your books. BDB is my absolute fav, I also like Fallen Angel series, it's not BDB, but it's not supposed to be. So excited for The Shadows, but will definitely read The Bourbon Kings. Keep doing what you're doing J.R. - you got something good going!

message 24: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Wagner everything you have wrote has been really, really good!!!! I look forward to reading the BK series.

message 25: by Kadee (new)

Kadee Anderson Honey, hush! You are an amazing author. I'm ecstatic for your new series and I sincerely hope it's as successful as the Brotherhood so that you can write to your heart's content! I know it's not much, but I assure you I'll buy every book you release! Happy writing! ♡♡♡♡

message 26: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie If you're scared about the Bourbon Kings like you were for Dark Lover, I call that a good omen for us, your readers. When I started Dark Lover, within three pages it had sucked me into the Brotherhood's world and has never let me go. I anxiously look forward to the Bourbon Kings.

message 27: by Ladyeire (new)

Ladyeire Breville I've already commented on FB but I thought I'd mention here that your outlook on why/how you write and your take on a reader's sacred space is...beautiful. Writing is intensely personal and I'm still trying to perfect what I do. On top of being a kick ass writer you also seem like a genuinely good person...good and so damn funny. Keep on keepin' on, my dear. I know I'm among an extremely large number, but I'll always be in your corner...in a non-stalkerish kinda way :D

message 28: by Joyce (new)

Joyce I have loved every book of yours that I have read. I was always told thay we are our worst critic. So for you to be all freaked out about the Bourbon Kings means it's going to be epic.
Congratulations! !!!!!

message 29: by Deborah (new)

Deborah I don't care if you rewrite the phone book; I love your stuff so much I'll read anything you give us (and so will my sister). Not the best reason, but there you have it.

message 31: by Colette (new)

Colette Carroll-sutherland Your books rocks :) im sure the Bourbon Kings will be just a great as the rest, if not better.

message 32: by Joan (new)

Joan Gresham Dear Warden,
I'm not here to blow smoke, but you gotta know you're the s#!t. I bought dark lover 7 years ago walking around a bookstore romance section stocking up for 6 weeks of bed life after a back surgery. Read it in 9 hours sent my husband back out to get Lover Eternal and thank fuc& Z's book was out as well. Here's the deal, your raw, real and hell'a talented. Of course BK will be great. I went back to ALL the Moorehouse books, Jessica Bird etc. and loved them. Yes, they are not the BDB but your writing is so fantastic, and everything you put out is original and it keeps the reader wanting more. You mentioned Coke in your blog, like a brand and I honestly would say fu(/ yeah, have you ever had bad Ben and Jerry's? Come on, you had me at Burbon. Looking forward to more amazing books that I can use to justify not cooking, cleaning, ignoring family and staying up all night because I can't put the damn thing down!!! You do you girl! Can't wait!

message 33: by Wyrdeaux (new)

Wyrdeaux Go ahead and finish freaking out and doubting yourself. Take a couple of days to rest up, then tick off the positives. It's a new series with all new characters. The readers have no pre-conceived notions of how they should or shouldn't behave. It's a new world. The rules are different and you can do things that were not possible in the BDB books. As difficult as some of us find it to believe, the BDB books were not for everyone. A new series may attract a whole different group of readers who have no idea what a fabulous writer you are because the BDB books weren't their cup of tea. You said your publishers jumped right on board. You didn't say they grudgingly allowed you to do this because of your past performance. They wouldn't be giving you enthusiastic support if they had doubts about the viability of this new project. Yes, they admire and respect you and some of them probably love you (in a non-creepy way) and consider you a friend. But at the end of the day, those are also the money people who have to protect the business interest side of things. They believe that you're going to make them money and that's always a good thing. You're giving birth to a new baby and you have all the normal worries and nerves associated with that. You'll go through the copy edits, count all the fingers and toes, do the new baby well checks and begin making preparations to show off your newest offspring to the world. Take a deep breath and give yourself a pat on the back before you dive into the next step. We're all rooting for you and eager to meet your newest creation. :) Hang in there!

message 34: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Thank you so much for your honest revelations!!! I guess deep down, the opinion that matters most is your own...it's your work, your baby. It must be hard to put yourself out there every time! I L*O*V*E your writing style and am looking forward to your new series! XO

message 35: by Marion (new)

Marion Scott I am presently reading a series from a different author then I will start on your many series' as yet I have never read anything of yours (I was asked to join yor page, I had honestly never heard of you) but if your books are anywhere near as good as your blogs I have lots to look forward to

message 36: by Brittany (last edited Feb 09, 2015 10:51AM) (new)

Brittany I am in such deep shit.

BDB is one thing. And that series had my heart. I guess I will see just how big it is after I read the first BK book.

You are making me reconsider just how much love I have to give, Warden. haha

And so, again, I am in deep shit.

Also, this.

"...writers are not manufacturing machines. I get frustrated, too."

Whether you wrote it with the intention of giving advice or not, I am taking it as such. I want to start writing my own stuff and I think this bit of info will be invaluable. So thank you for writing and for being brave enough to keep up with it.

message 37: by Cindy (new)

Cindy Ziegler I love your books so for me if you wrote it I will read it..

message 38: by Ruth (new)

Ruth I am so excited for the BK. I love new adventures. Whatever you write, I will read. I am so excited for The Shadows, also. Thank you for being an Author, you have enriched my life!

message 39: by Sheri (new)

Sheri Schreier Forgot 1thing, jr, now u have a fan base where with BDB u were brand new. If I had one wish in ur head, bring life to wellesandra. Anyway, I buy your series all at one clip, so I have faith u won't disappoint. Xoxo super fan, Sheri rose. Ps, stop thinking so hard and just write.

message 40: by Angie (new)

Angie Bee JR I think timing is everything. The timing was right and the market was ready for the BDB, the Angel series, and the BK. Just keep listening to your Rice Krispies. They haven't failed you yet.

Theresa H. Barbee Dear favorite author a few years ago an acquaintance stopped me to tell me she had dound an "adult version of Twilight" After explaining I've never read Twilight and thinking chick is cray cray I asked yeah Ok what's the book she started discussing the plot of Dark Lover. Where I informed her yeah JR Ward love her this is the first go get the rest yeah read her falling Angeles series. I've preorder the BK and if you wrote instructional manuals I'd read them. Only a handful of authors make me want to meet their characters your one. As long as the stories keep coming I'll keep reading thanks for that.

message 42: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Rowe Your books work because your characters either grab you by the front
Of your shirt and say "come along for the fuckin' ride of your life " or they grab you
by the heart and say "have I got a story to tell you". Anxiously awaiting BK's. Ilike the ride!

message 43: by Terri (new)

Terri Stahl I agree about V's ending but you kinda made up for it in Paynes book with the chapter about Jane finding V at the penthouse, still would hVe loved for you have written they're ceremony with Jane doing the carving. I am not a romance book lover but you I love. The rough urban feel the language the blood and guts oh yeah!!! It's all about the story, the hook, whether we care about the characters. Dark lover certainly hooked me, and I am ready for the Shadows. Bring on The Bourbon Kings. Keep calm and carry on. Don't ever stop, no cookie cutter books for you Thank God

message 44: by Helen (new)

Helen You write it, I will buy it and read it! Have pre-ordered The bourbon kings and am looking forward to reading it.

message 45: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Lunsford You write it we'll read it!

Why? Well... because any friend of the Brothers are a friend of ours!

message 46: by Sarah (last edited Feb 09, 2015 11:34AM) (new)

Sarah I absolutely loved the brotherhood books. Before I finished the 1st chapter of dark lover (just over 3 yrs ago now) I knew I was in love. Iv read them all 3 times since and am in the middle of the 4th reread. I also enjoyed the fallen angels, just maybe not as much as bdb. I cannot wait to get lost in another one of your worlds. And hopefully I can fall in love again

I just hope the brothers dont get to jealous. ..hehe

message 47: by Denise (new)

message 50: by Deni (last edited Feb 09, 2015 12:16PM) (new)

Deni You are unbelievable person and that only adds up to the quality and enjoyment of your books. The struggle you go through makes you so approachable. Because of that I admire you even more! Unfortunately BK won't be published in Bulgaria (that's where I'm from) but I'll definitely find a way to buy it and read it ^_^!
Wish you all the luck in the world !!!
