1956 – Don Siegel’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, based on Jack Finney’s novel The Body Snatchers originally serialized in Collier’s in 1954, is released and is widely regarded as a political or social allegory. It will be remade in 1978, 1993, and 2007.

1959 – British novelist Kingsley Amis delivers the first of a series of lectures on science fiction at the Christian Gauss Seminars at Princeton.  Published in 1960 as New Maps of Hell, it will be instrumental in gaining general literary attention to the genre, and will be the first work of science fiction criticism to be published in a mass-market paperback (by Ballantine).
