Text for Tired Eyes:

I was walking, slow, but walking,
and the ocean was above my knees.
I didn’t know of the cold that crawled up
or the mist that hung silent above the surface.
I knew the darkness, old friends since longer
than we’d both admit, and I knew the waves,
in ways I promised I would not explain.
You found me there, walking, slow,
but walking, and you called out to me.
I do not know how deep I would have gone
if you did not know how to pronounce my name.
Do I thank you now, drop to my knees
in the shallow waters and kiss the salt on your shoes?
Do I tell you of the deep, and the soundless
I was headed for?  I will speak to you
with the sea on my lips, and leak salt
of my own when I offer gratitude
for saving what was left of my life.
I was walking, slow, but walking
and you called out to me.  Thank you,
through the mist and the waves,
thank you, for the lighter fabric on me,
the water line you stopped no higher,
than my chest.  My heart never felt
the cold, my lips never tasted
the lightless far below. Thank
you.
