Need Wisdom?

"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault and it will be given to him." ~James 1:5 (NIV)

Wisdom. The quality or state of being wise; knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action; sagacity, discernment, or insight.

Sometimes in this crazy world wisdom seems hard to come by. And often it only takes one look at worldly wisdom to say "No, thanks."

But there is an alternative. The wisdom that comes from God is perfect and complete, and it's ours for the asking. Not just a little, but a lot. Our God gives generously. On top of His generosity, He does it without criticizing and finding fault.

Here are a few other Biblical facts about wisdom.

1. Wisdom begins with reverencing God. "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom..." (Psalm 111:10a, NIV)

2. The world was founded by wisdom. "But God made the earth by His power; He founded the world by His wisdom and stretched out the heavens by His understanding." (Jeremiah 10:12, NIV)

3. God is all-wise. "Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!" (Romans 11:33a, NIV)

4. All the treasures of wisdom are hidden in Christ. "...in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." (Colossians 2:2b-3, NIV)

5. Those who reject wisdom will suffer the consequences (Proverbs 1:20-32), but those who listen to wisdom (God) will be safe and untroubled. "...but whoever listens to Me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm." (Prov. 1:33, NIV)

6. True wisdom is God-given. "For the LORD gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding." (Prov. 2:6, NIV)

7. Those who win souls are wise. "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise." (Prov. 11:30, NIV)

8. Those who walk with the wise become wise. "He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm." (Prov. 13:20, NIV)

9. God's wisdom far surpasses that of mans. "For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength." (1 Cor. 1:25, NIV)

10. God's Word can make you wise. "...and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus." (2 Timothy 3:15, NIV)

Heavenly Father,

We confess that you are Wisdom--a wisdom that far surpasses what we finite humans are capable of understanding. Your Wisdom created the world, Lord, and we thank You that You give it generously to us. All we have to do is ask. Grant us the wisdom of reverencing and following You--the true wisdom that only be found in the presence of our all-wise God. Give us a desire to be wise in a world that grows more unwise and ungodly by the second. Help us to see the wisdom in winning souls for Your kingdom, and to follow through in obedience to You. Give us wise friends, Lord, and help us to realize that You are wisest of all friends. Thank You, Lord, that Your Word is a word of wisdom, and that it holds the key to eternal life through Jesus Christ.

In His powerful and perfect name,

Amen
