Print on Demand (POD) options for indie authors

So I haven't been posting like I said I would but I do have a legitimate excuse. In early December, my husband, 4-month-old baby girl and I relocated from one state to another in Australia. Of course, during that time we also managed to have my daughter's christening, some family photos, move in to our new house, Christmas and New Years. So here we are, six days into 2015, finally settled and FINALLY connected to the Internet once more.

I didn't realize just how reliant I was on it. There's something magical about just clicking open Firefox and going straight to the Google homepage. And now I can blog again...

What's been happening in the writing world of Lauren Dawes I hear you ask? Not a lot really. I'm still working on the copy edit for Half Blood. It is due to go to my proofreader on Friday though.

I've also been teaching myself how to use Adobe inDesign as I'm switching from Createspace to Lightning Source to print paperback copies of my books. A friend of mine uses Lightning Source and after seeing the superior quality of the print, I've decided to jump off the Createspace ship and go with LS.

Don't get me wrong - Createspace definitely has its place in the indie writing world. It's a great place for new indies to start when they first want to have their books as paperbacks. They're rather cost effective and easy to use. They give authors a little help with generating a generic cover for them to use until they have one designed for them (and let's face it, the competitive world of book cover designs is alive and raging! - something I'll post about later too.)

Lightning Source, on the other hand, seems to be a little more 'professional' in their approach.  LS requires a lot more information from you just to set up an account with them. It may appear to be very daunting to some people, but I believe it's worthwhile. The main difference between them is the use of inDesign to upload the content rather than just MS Word, hence the reason I'm teaching myself how to use it. YouTube has been a godsend, and if you're in the same boat as me, this channel is the best for learning all about inDesign.

I haven't actually printed with them yet, but I will be within the next month or so.A blog post will follow!
