Friday Fast 5 with Elizabeth Andrews

Today I welcome paranormal romance writer Elizabeth Andrews to the Friday Fast 5!

What is on the top of your to be read pile?

Right now, Carey Elwes’s As You Wish is on the top of the teetering stack of books I want to read.  Santa brought it since I asked and was evidently deserving.

What was the best movie you saw in the past year and why?

Dracula Untold.  Aside from the very pretty Luke Evans, I loved the back story of his character, all the things that drive him to his huge decision, plus the lovely, wonderful twist which I won’t share in case someone wanted to see it and hasn’t yet.  I’m not a huge vampire fan, but I can’t wait for the dvd release of this one so I can watch it again.  And again.

What time of day is your best writing time?  Up early with the birds or wake up in the middle of the night with an inspiration and have to go write it down?

I actually love writing in the afternoons.  I’m not functional enough early in the day, but by late morning, I’ve had a couple cups of tea and gotten my brain going, so I can sit down and write till at least suppertime on a good day–sometimes longer on a fantastic day.  I do wake up early in the morning on occasion with a fantastic story idea that I absolutely have to write down right away so I don’t forget it.  I’ve learned the hard way that thinking I’ll remember it for later is a mistake, because it’ll be gone before ‘later’ comes around.

What is your favorite part of writing?

I love the actual writing.  Revising and rewriting I have grown to hate (especially since I’ve spent months on my current rewrites and now, thanks to a bright idea I had, I have more to look forward to), though it’s a necessary stage.  When I’m writing a first draft, there are days when it’s hard, when it’s painful, but I still just adore finding out what happens next, right along with my characters.  Clearly, I’m not a plotter, so very often, the things that happen as I’m writing surprise me as much as they do my characters.

What advice would you give new authors?

If you can’t stop, don’t stop writing.  There may be times you need a break, or simply can’t eke out another word, and that’s okay.  But if you love it, if you need to write, you should keep doing it, just for yourself.  If you get to share it with others, that’s a bonus, but the act of writing, of telling a story, should always be for yourself first.  And if you decide you’re aiming for publication, study: read, go to workshops or conferences in your area of interest and outside, read some more, join a writers’ group, and read.  Did I mention read?

Don’t Miss Hunting Medusa  The Medusa Trilogy, Book 1

Andrea Rosakis expects the handsome Harvester to go for the kill. Instead, his attempt to take the amulet imprinted on her skin without harming her takes her completely by surprise. And ends with the two of them in a magical bind—together.

Though their attraction is combustible, her impending PMS (Pre Magical-Curse Syndrome) puts a real damper on any chance of a relationship. But Kallan isn’t the only Harvester tracking Andi, and they must cooperate to stay one step ahead of a ruthless killer before they can have any future, together or apart.

A Little More About Elizabeth Andrews

Elizabeth Andrews has been a book lover since she was old enough to read.  She read her copies of Little Women and the Little House series so many times, the books fell apart.  As an adult, her book habit continues.  She has a room overflowing with her literary collection right now, and still more spreading into other rooms.  Almost as long as she’s been reading great stories, she’s been attempting to write her own.  Thanks to a fifth grade teacher who started the class on creative writing, Elizabeth went from writing creative sentences to short stories and eventually full-length novels.  Her father saved her poor, callused fingers from permanent damage when he brought home a used typewriter for her.

Elizabeth found her mother’s stash of romance novels as a teenager, and-though she loves horror- romance became her very favorite genre, making writing romances a natural progression.  There are more than just a few manuscripts, however, tucked away in a filing cabinet that will never see the light of day.

Along with her enormous book stash, Elizabeth lives with her husband of  twenty years and two young adult sons, though no one else in the house reads nearly as much as she does.  When she’s not at work or buried in books or writing, there is a garden outside full of herbs, flowers and vegetables that requires occasional attention.
