Character Interview: Melissa Webb
Q1: How are you coping with all the fuss that surrounds your boyfriend?
MW: I’m coping with it just fine, now. At first I found it a bit odd. And, what’s even more strange is how interested in me people seem to be. The first time I experienced the paparazzi I was genuinely scared. It was a frenzy. All I could think was, It’s just us, what the hell is going on. Luke loves it and he’s very good with how he handles it. I’m more confident when he is around. He knows what to do and more importantly what not to do. He’s a natural.
Q2: You must be very proud of him?
MW: Of Course, He’s brilliant. I’m very proud of him and he deserves it.
Q3: What’s it’s like to date a Rock Star?
MW: Exactly the same as dating a doctor or a warehouse worker. He does his job and gets paid. The only difference is he doesn’t come home every night. That’s the hardest part for me. His fans see him more then me. Lucky sods. I’ve accepted it. It does mean when we do see each other we have so much to talk about. We’re never bored of each other. Although even when he’s home he doesn’t switch off. He’s always writing new material or getting ready for something else. It’s who he is and I would never dream of changing that.
Q4: Do you get on with the rest of his band?
MW: Yes. Luckily I do. They are great lads. Love them. They are like my big brothers.
Q5: Your Best friend dates Luke’s Best friend and band member. Do you approve?
MW: Oh yes. Anyway, it doesn’t matter what I think. Beth knows whats she wants and goes for it. She doesn’t take orders. If I don’t like who she dates (It’s happened) she takes my opinion on board but ultimately makes her own choice. Dale is perfect though. He’s lovely.
Q6: Any gossip you can tell us about Luke and his band?
MW: I have lot’s but I’m not telling you. What happens on tour, stays on tour.. That’s the rule and I’m not even aloud to break it.
Q7: It’s common knowledge that it was you that helped get them their big break. Do you take the credit?
MW: It was all me. … No, not really. I made a decision the weekend I meet him and I just went with it. I had no idea that decision would lead us here. However, it was them on that stage and I have nothing to do with that. They love what they do and they take it very seriously.
Q8: They’ve just finished their UK tour and head to America soon. Is it hard as Luke’s girlfriend to ignore the gossip that seems to surround him?
MW: Of course it’s hard but more that it annoys me. I know him and I trust him and when people write crap about him I get angry. I’m getting used to it. Sort of. I have to just ignore it or it would drive me nuts. He has given me no reason to doubt him. I focus on that.
Q9: It must be nice to have such a talented musician as a boyfriend. Does he play when he’s at home?
MW: People assume he gets home and serenades me all day. No, it’s bloody annoying because he starts playing something and I get into it and then he stops and does something else. Many times I say ‘Luke just play the damn song. I like that’ and he say ‘Hush women I’m working on a masterpiece. It isn’t ready’ He’s never fully happy with anything. He drives everyone mad. We love him though and he’s very hard to be angry with. He has a way of charming everyone around him even when he’s being a stroppy git. He does sometimes, it is nice when he does I won’t lie. When he got back from tour recently he was so tierd that all he wanted to do was relax and watch the football.
Q10: What plans do you have for the future?
MW: Honestly, I don’t know. I’m still trying to decide what I want to do. I want Luke to be proud of me to. He always says he is, but it isn’t enough for me. I don’t want to live off him I want to earn my own money. I’m working on it. Watch this space.
Q11: What song is your favorite of theirs?
MW: That’s easy ‘Weekend High’ I have no idea why, but I go nuts to it. It is becoming a fan favorite so it proves they have fans with great taste.
Q12: Can you tell us about any crazy fan stories?
MW: Nothing too crazy, yet. When they went to New York just after they were signed, so they were still pretty unknown at that point. I came home from work and found a group of girls outside our house. That was when I started to understand just what was happening. It was very strange to have people outside your house and swooning over your boyfriend. They were very nice though.
Q13: Is it true that Luke write all the songs?
MW: Absolutely true. The others are just not songwriter. He does what he does and then when he’s ready he gets them together and lets them loose. They are great musicians and they are very good at working together. Lyrics, all Luke but how the song eventually ends up sounding like is a group thing. Although Luke does have the last word, if he doesn’t like something and he feels strongly about it, it doesn’t happen. They don’t argue, not really but it can get heated. They are all very strong characters. Toby, surprisingly is the least bothered, he just says ‘Tell me how hard I can smash it in this track and I’m happy’ He’s ace. The other two are much more vocal on what they want.
Q14 Anything you would like to say to their fans?
MW: Thank you and don’t believe the media, ever!
